Introduce yourself.
Jon Rhinehart is my name. I am a father, mountain biker, dog lover and husband. I enjoy hiking with my dog, spending time with family and going mountain biking with friends. While I am on my adventures, I like to listen to podcasts and study nutrition. The outdoor activities are fantastic in Arizona.
2) What did you eat prior to Carnivore?
Prior to the carnivore, I was on Keto diet for two years. Prior to that, I followed the Standard American Diet. My Keto consisted of whole foods and a clean Keto. Most of my diet advice was from Doctor Berg. This is how I lost all my weight. I went from 285 to 195. But I had terrible digestion. I never had this on the SAD Diet. I was eating huge salads, followed by a little fatty meat and a few squares of dark choclate. I tried kimchi, probiotics of all kinds and nothing helped. Now that I look back, I realise I was eating more fiber and anti-nutrients than my body could handle.
Why did you first try Carnivore?
My bad digestion was caused by Keto. I was also listening to Amber O'hearn and Shawn Baker. I was curious to see if a carnivore-style diet could help me shed the 15-20 pounds I thought I needed to lose. I had heard about it in my Keto podcast. It took me about a full year to decide whether I wanted to try it. Like everyone else, I said that I would try it for a month. The 30 days turned into 90 and then 365. I now have no intention to change.
4) What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?
My Carnivore Diet began with coffee, meats, spices and dairy. I followed this diet for several months. Keto did not eliminate my skin itching, and Carnivore didn't either. Then I decided to take it a step further. I cut everything out except for meat, salt and drinking water. The itching stopped as soon as I cut out dairy. Later, I found out it was Dairy. Since then, I've added spices, coffee, and eggs back. I eat about 2 to 3 pounds of red meat per day. I drink 3-4 cups black coffee with a few eggs.
5) What are the benefits you have seen since beginning your Carnivore Diet?
Since beginning the Carnivore Diet. I've lost four inches from my waist. My weight is the same. My mountain bike allows me to go higher and further. I am always full of energy and never sick. My seasonal allergies have disappeared. Keto still gave me some food cravings. Carnivore is amazing. Keto made me think about food a lot more than I do now. My digestion is perfect now. I feel like I'm almost weightless. I feel as if I'm eating to fuel my body. It's incredibly liberating.
What are the negatives of the Carnivore Diet?
It isn't very socially acceptable. I'm not a fan of this low-fat world. I don't have the money to go out for a meal.
Do you exercise when you are on the Carnivore Diet? If so, how do you go about it and what is your routine?
I exercise. I paddleboard, hike and mountain bike. I'm incredibly fit for my age. I have never lost my endurance, and I can do all of this on an empty stomach.
What advice would you offer to someone who has been considering this diet but isn't ready to make the jump?
I would encourage anyone who is interested to give it a try. You must be honest and intelligent to interpret your results. Give it your best shot. It might take 90 days of only eating meat, salt and water to determine if the method works.
9) Do You Think Carnivore Diet Will Ever Be Accepted As A Mainstream Diet?
I've read Good Calories Bad Calories at least a dozen time. The first couple of times I read the book, I was focused on the energy balance aspect that mainstream science messed up. After going Carnivore, I reread that book several times. I picked up the main point of the book, which is that animal foods are disappearing from our diet due to an anti-meat agenda and religious ideology. This has led to the conclusion that science is completely wrong and has been for the past 120 years. I hope this carnivore time will be a rare exception. This is why I chose to write my testimonial and share my story.
What would you like to add and how can people find you?
I was a heavy drinker, had high blood-pressure, anxiety, and was always agitated. I wasn't a nice person. Keto has helped me become the person I am now 85%. Keto is more carnivore-like than the SAD. You will end up cutting out a lot of processed foods such as sugar, refined carbohydrates and seed oil. When people go Keto, I think they end up eating more vegetables than before. These are not healthy and can cause problems for many. They are now considered to be a waste of time and starvation foods. Instead of tracking all your macros, lazy keto diets focus on reducing net carbohydrates to 25-50g per day in order to enter and maintain ketosis. This approach is far less strict than traditional keto diets because you don't have to keep such close tabs on caloric intake or macronutrient ratio.
In simple terms, a lazy ketogenic eating plan allows you to skip tracking macros. Instead, it encourages you to eat whole foods low in carbs that you enjoy most.
