Introduce yourself.
Crystal Sales is my name. I am married and the mother of three beautiful children. I am a Master hairstylist. I own my own Hair Salon. I have been in the hair industry for 21 years. I also run my own salon for six years. Weight has been a problem for me all my life. It started during puberty, and spiraled from there. In my early 20s, I managed to maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet. I maintained that weight for four years before I had children. My first child was born when I was 28, and my youngest at 33. My weight was 260 pounds when I had my third baby and I couldn't control it. A dear friend of mine introduced me to the ketogenic diet, and I am forever grateful. It has been almost three years since I started the keto diet. I have lost 110lbs and in the past year, just focused on maintaining.
I have always loved food and cooking. Funny fact: I always wanted to be either a hairstylist, or a chef. As a keto carnivore and recipe developer, I consider myself blessed to be able to combine two of my favorite things.
2) What did you eat prior to Carnivore?
I was eating clean/strict keto for about a year when I decided to go carnivore.
Why did you first try Carnivore?
More information and reading I found as I became more informed about keto and my improved health. This was mostly how toxic and anti-nutrients are in many of the plant foods that I was still eating while on keto. It could be oxalates or lectins, Phytates, etc. Then I decided to become a carnivore. I feel like an outsider because I lost almost all my weight before I started carnivore, and I didn't have any chronic illness that I was trying cure. I just wanted to feel better!
How do you personally approach a Carnivore Diet?
I have tried to be as dogmatic-free as possible. After a strict carnivore diet for about a year, I slowly began to reduce the amount of meat in my diet one by one to see how it affected my body. I have tried to add the least toxic and offensive vegetables back into my daily diet. This is mostly for texture and variety. I like to add things here and there to my meals for variety. However, I feel best when I follow a 100% carnivore diet and aim for 95%.
5) What are the benefits you have seen since beginning your Carnivore Diet?
The greatest benefit I have experienced since becoming a carnivore is the consistent and increased energy. Other benefits include improved mood stability, better sleep and better skin, hair, and nail growth. Since last year, I've had only one allergic reaction hiccough.
What are the negatives of the Carnivore Diet?
The biggest downside to the carnivore lifestyle for me would be having to defend my choices to family and friends who don't get it. At least at the beginning. They don't bring it up anymore, since they can see that I'm healthy, thriving, and free of scurvy, and it has been over a year. Most of them are not in a position to discuss diet with me, if you understand what I mean.
7) Do You Exercise on the Carnivore Diet? If so, how do you go about it and what are you doing?
After a couple of months on my ketogenic journey, I did crunches and push-ups for the loose skin around my arms. But that was all. After a little over a month on the carnivore diet, I started working out. Since I started, I have changed the type of exercise I do. When I first started, I ran and did weight training at the gym. Now I do longer walks and more resistance training at my home. Even though I am not as consistent as i would like, I still do it a few times a week.
What advice would you offer to someone who has been considering this diet but isn't ready to make the jump?
Do your research on what electrolytes you will need and what supplements. Try not to be too dogmatic or stressed about it, and start! You can always adjust things as you go to see what works for you.
9) Do You Think Carnivore Diet Will Ever Be Accepted As A Mainstream Diet?
I hope it is true! I truly believe that we were meant to consume a diet based on animal products. I believe that most people's health issues would be greatly improved by this. At this point, I would be content to see keto become mainstream... even though I believe carnivore diet is best.
What would you like to add and how can people find you?
I encourage people to just try. I tried it originally, thinking that I would only do 30 days. I haven't looked at my original decision since. Try it for 30 days and see what you think! You don't need to eat only ribeyes! You can eat the meat that you want and can afford. I've got a lot of ideas and recipes on Instagram.
