1. Introduce yourself.
Hello, my name is Cassie. I am 32 years old and live in the northern Pennsylvania. Since October 1, 2018, I have been on a carnivore-only diet.
2) What did you eat prior to Carnivore?
In 2012, I discovered a podcast by Vinnie Tortorich. He coined the phrase No Sugar No Grains. I listened to every word as I was training for half-marathons. It's a solid message, but I just couldn't nail it.
Why did you first try Carnivore?
In 2015, I had my second child and I knew almost instantly that something was wrong. After weeks of research, and with no help from lactation consultants or medical professionals, I found out that my baby is Milk Soy Protein intolerant. He's also intolerant to tomatoes and store-bought meat (most likely because they are fed soy in feedlots), and to eggs. To be able breastfeed my baby, I spent months on strict elimination dieting, eating mostly chicken, pork and carrots. For 15 months, I ate only foods I prepared myself. I also ate a few packaged and processed foods. Sugar is one food that does not cause allergies. During these 15 months, I consumed a lot sugar. Coffee and nut-milk with sugar were my go-to dairy free desserts. I ate them all day long. I had also determined that wheat, nuts, and gluten were not triggers for the baby, so I ate a lot more homemade bread and ate my body weight in pasta with cream sauces made from cashews. I was amazed at how much what we put into our bodies can affect us. In just 8 weeks, my baby went from crying in pain and having rashes all over his body with projectile vomiting to being completely happy.
After breastfeeding, I successfully followed the Whole-30 lifestyle for a few months. From there, I transitioned to a Keto/NSNG life style. I was successful for a few weeks, but then lost myself after a couple days eating nothing but carbohydrates. I discovered the carnivore tag on Instagram and joined that community. I knew I would have to give it a try. A week after I started my journey, I was walking along with a podcast when the host stated that 'pure moderation is harder than pure abstinence'. That hit me hard. For years I had tried to moderate my carb consumption, but failed every time. My health depends on me avoiding all carbs.
4) What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?
Carnivore, I eat a lot of local food. I can get raw milk, raw cheese, grass-fed meat, pasture raised chicken, and eggs within 40 miles of where I live. I have beef from a local farm in my freezer, but I ate more than he could produce. I am now forced to buy high-quality meat at a bulk store or butcher until the end of July.
5) Tell us about the benefits you have seen since beginning your Carnivore Diet.
Since I started carnivore, my sleep has improved dramatically. I have struggled with sleep all my life. Most nights, I was lucky to get 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep. After eating carnivore, I am full of energy and sleep well every night. My mood has also become more stable since I started eating carnivore. I'm not as agitated by anything. I can look at the situation and weigh my options instead of reacting. My hair stopped falling out, and my pores shrank. With a meat-based food diet, I find it easy to do intermittent fasting.
6) Have you noticed any negative effects of the Carnivore Diet?
I have not experienced any negative effects from eating this way, but it is frustrating to eat this way in front of people who do not understand the truth behind eating red meat. It is hard for me to accept that most Americans believe that eating fat from grass-fed beef, or even a piece of bacon can significantly reduce their life expectancy. They are also eating pizzas at gas stations, donuts in packages and drinking coffee milkshakes with high sugar content.
7) How do you find the Carnivore Diet and how do you exercise?
In February, I joined a fitness center. I used to love running. When I joined the gym, I wanted to lift weights in the gym for the first ever time. I began with an app that I downloaded on my phone to introduce me to dumbbells and machines, but I felt I could do more. Sydney Cummings is my new obsession. She has been releasing a new workout video every morning at five in the morning for more than a year. There are literally pages and pages to choose from. Recently, I bought a stand-up board and will be spending lots of time on local lakes with it this summer.
8) How would you advise someone who has been considering this diet but is not ready to take the plunge?
I strongly encourage anyone who wants to feel good physically or mentally to try the carnivore lifestyle for a while. Redmond's Real Salt, along with plenty of high-quality meat, can help you overcome sugar cravings in the first week. Red meat is the most satisfying to me.
9) Will Carnivore ever be accepted by the mainstream?
I hope the carnivore way of eating will be accepted one day as "normal" but right now I think the odds are against it happening anytime soon. Our message is being suppressed by the anti-meat campaign that has been circulating.
10) What would you like to add and how can others follow your journey?
