I am Kat Nikao. I am a Nutritional Therapy practitioner, a long-distance runner, and an Air Force officer!

2) What did you eat prior to Carnivore?

Before switching to a carnivore-style diet, I had been following a classic low-carb ketogenic diet for about a year. About five years prior to that I had been following a loose paleo diet. I also avoided processed sugar and vegetable oils for many years. So the benefits I experienced on a more carnivore diet are not just due to it being a healthier diet than SAD.

Why did you first try Carnivore?

In 2018, I was privileged to attend Low Carb San Diego. The carnivore dieting was a topic that many speakers and attendees discussed. It seemed as though the benefits of low-carb were being taken to a new level by those who follow this diet. Georgia Ede's participation in a panel of speakers who answered questions really blew me away. The audience members kept asking about sleep problems and restless legs. After the other speakers on the panel gave their inputs, it seemed that every time Dr. Ede took the microphone, he would say, "I had this problem when I was eating low carb but it went away after I switched to a carnivore ..."

I have an extreme personality, and I've already fallen in love low carb. Carnivore was the next thing that I wanted to try!

4) What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?

I do not adhere to the strict carnivore approach as some people do. I think a strict carnivore lifestyle is good for people with severe digestive and autoimmune conditions. However, I don't believe that the majority of benefits come from a diet which eliminates all plants. I keep a few plant foods and spices in my diet to ensure that I do not lose my tolerance for them. I can also enjoy a bit of chocolate or sauce with my meat if I wish. I often use the term “dirty carnivore” and I have created a Facebook page with that name. I think this is a more realistic and appealing way to get people to eat meat.

5) What are the benefits you have seen since beginning your Carnivore Diet?

Each step I took in changing my diet has brought me benefits. I've experienced benefits from each step of my diet changes over the years.

What are the negatives of a Carnivore Diet?

My only complaint about a meat-based diet is that my bowel movements are still a bit irregular. But I also know that this is a problem experienced by a minority of carnivores. I don't believe fiber to be an important part of our diets so I will continue to experiment.

Do you exercise when you are on the Carnivore Diet? If so, how do you go about it and what is your routine?

I've always been a long-distance runner, and I compete in races fairly regularly. Since I switched to a low carb diet and then to a meat-based diet, I have run some of the fastest time of my life. They continue to improve. I believe that carbs aren't necessary for either short, intense exercise or long, moderate intensity.

What advice would you offer to someone who has been considering this diet but isn't ready to make the jump?

I'd encourage anyone who wants to try the carnivore diet that I found it easier than low-carb! This diet may sound restrictive and intimidating but it was the first one I tried that made me look forward to the foods I could enjoy and not backwards at all I couldn't.

Do you believe that Carnivore diet will be accepted by the mainstream?

The carnivore lifestyle is too successful to ignore for very long. It may not be mainstream because there are too many people against it, but I think it will gain more popularity and acceptance. I hope and expect to see the popularity of meat-based, protein-rich diets increase.

What would you like to add and how can people follow your trip?

I dislike it when people ignore the importance of diet, either because they think they're healthy or because they haven't seen "healthy eating" work so well. I was in my early 20s and athletic when I began a carnivore and low carb diet. This diet is not only for those in poor health or who are overweight. You will be surprised at how much it can still do for your health and reduce the risk of chronic disease later in life.

Saturated and trans fats should be avoided as much as possible, as they can increase your risk for heart disease and other chronic illnesses. By doing so, you will get all the essential fat acids and other nutrients your body requires to stay energized and healthy.
