Managing Symptoms of Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune condition that damages the small intestine. This damage prevents the body from absorbing nutrients, including iron, folate and vitamin B12.

The reaction damages tiny, fingerlike projections in the small intestine called villi that absorb nutrients from food. Without these villi, a person can become malnourished no matter how much they eat.

Doctors diagnose celiac disease with a blood test, which looks for antibodies to tissue transglutaminase. They can also do a biopsy of the small intestine, which involves passing a thin tube (an endoscope) into the stomach and intestine while you are sedated. A positive biopsy confirms the diagnosis of celiac disease. The best way to manage the condition is to avoid foods with gluten completely.

Managing Blood Sugars

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks their small intestine when they eat gluten. This leads to the small intestine’s villi getting damaged and prevents it from absorbing nutrients properly.
