Sugar-Free & Keto Chocolate Cream Cold Brew

Starbucks loves to add new drinks every summer to their menu. In 2022, they introduced Chocolate Cream Cold Brew. You can choose between this chocolate delight and their vanilla cream cold brew.

Starbucks Chocolate Cream Cold Brew Coffee is a blend of vanilla sweet cream and chocolate malted milk powder. It's served over cold brew coffee.

Ingredients

To find out what's in the chocolate cream cold brew, I called my local Starbucks. I was informed by the barista that they use sweet cream and chocolate malt milk powder. They then add vanilla syrup to the cold brew.

Here's what I did to make this tasty drink sugar-free and keto-friendly.

  • Cocoa Powder
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Unsweetened Nut milk, such as almond and milkadamia
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Liquid Monk Fruit Sweetener
  • Cold Brew Coffee
  • Optional Malted Milk Powder (contains Gluten and Sugar)

Substitutions

Liquid Monk Fruit

You can substitute liquid monkfruit with powdered erythritol or monk fruit mixture. Use 1/2 teaspoon of the chocolate cream mixture.

Liquid stevia can be used in place of monk fruits.

For the sweeteners in cold brew coffee, liquid sugar-free sweeteners work best.

Alternatives to Vanilla Extract and Liquid sweetener

Sugar-free vanilla syrup could be used in place of both vanilla extract and monk fruit. Half a teaspoon to 1/2 a tablespoon of the vanilla extract in the coffee, and 1/2 tsp in the frothed cream chocolate.

You can choose from a variety of flavors when you purchase liquid monk fruit. You can also buy liquid vanilla monk fruits. This can be used in place of vanilla extract. You will need to use the same amount as the monk fruit.

You can also buy liquid vanilla stevia if you prefer stevia to monk fruit.

Heavy cream and milk

You can substitute the heavy whipping cream and nut milk in the recipe by using all the half and half. This will give the dish the same creaminess.

Powdered Malted Milk

Starbucks' original recipe of chocolate cream cold brew contains malted milk powder. However, I removed this ingredient to make this recipe gluten free. This powder also contains wheat flour, and barley.

This recipe is sugar-free. You don't need to use malted milk powder. The powder has added sugar.

This ingredient is allowed if you're okay with wheat, barley and sugar. It is recommended to use only 1 tablespoon.

How to make cold brew coffee

Cold brew can be purchased at the grocery store or made by you using this simple recipe.

  1. Add 1 cup of coarse coffee to a photo, then add 4 cups cold water.
  2. Keep the photo in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.
  3. You can then strain the coffee grinds, and get cold brew coffee.

Tools for Frothing

This recipe calls for you to thoroughly blend the cream mixture. There are several tools that can be used to do this.

A handheld milk frother is my favorite tool. It's lightweight, easy-to-clean, and can be stored on my countertop.

An immersion blender, a milk frother and a mini-bullet blender are all other tools you can use.

Sugar-Free and Keto Chocolate Cream Cold Brew

Total Time: 5 minutes

This sugar-free cold brew chocolate cream is easy to make.
You can make it in multiple ways. Ideal for keto.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cream

  • 2 Tablespoons Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened nut milk. I love milkadamia best.
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid monk fruit
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon of malted milk powder See notes.
  • 1 teaspoon Cocoa Powder

Vanilla Cold Brew

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 drops of liquid monk fruit sweetener
  • 3/4 cup to 1 Cup Cold Brew Coffee

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients and stir to make vanilla cold brew. If you like, add ice.
  2. Use a mixer to combine all ingredients for the chocolate cream. You can double the size of the chocolate cream or make it as thick as you like.
  3. Add chocolate cream to cold brew coffee

Notes

To make this drink more Starbucks-like, you can add malted milk powder to the recipe. This will result in 5.3g of total carbs to the recipe with 4 grams of sugar.

This ingredient contains wheat flour, barley and added sugar so I have left it out. Many people avoid these ingredients while on keto. If you're looking for a sugar-free option or are ok with the taste of malted milk powder, however, you can still add a tablespoon.
