Basic technologies like bicycles, wood stoves that burn cleanly and the humble apple corer provide many benefits with few downsides. Not only do the more advanced technologies have more downsides, but they also tend to create a need for themselves. Take cars for example. Initially, they allowed us to travel faster. However, the result was that people had to travel further to reach their destinations. We can't imagine life without them.
Some technologies do the opposite of their promises. Despite the fact that social media is meant to be a tool for bringing people together, loneliness is a major problem in our society. Recent survey shows that 3/5 Americans (61%) describe themselves as being lonely. Plains Indians in the 19th century probably did not suffer from loneliness. The Plains Indians lived in tribes that numbered 300 or more people, and the boundaries between family and community was blurred. The entire tribe is essentially one's extended family.
