Sweet Potato Chips

You won't want to stop eating these crisp sweet potatoes once you start! Add a little sea salt to them and serve with your favorite dips or as a snack.

It's easy to make homemade chips. They look like a lot of effort, but it isn't. These sweet potato chips are just as easy to make as my beet chips or air fryer veggies chips. They only require a few minutes prep and a bit of cooking.

You will devour these so fast, that you will need to make more soon. You should buy sweet potatoes at the grocery store every time.

Sea salt is the icing on these sweet chips. The sea salt adds a wonderful contrast to the sweet chips.

Why You will love this sweet potato chips recipe

  • Sweet and salty snack. Sweet potato chips are a great snack because you don't need to decide between sweet candy or salty chips. You get both!
  • Easy at home. You can make sweet potato chips in the oven using just a few simple ingredients.
  • Versatile snack option. These chips are versatile and can be eaten with any dip or as an accompaniment to sandwiches.
  • Budget-friendly. Sweet potatoes can be found in any supermarket.

Notes on Ingredients

Scroll down the recipe card for the ingredients quantities and the recipe instructions.

  • Sweet Potato You can peel off the skin or leave it on. If you're not a fan of sweet potato skin in general, you won't be bothered by the thinly sliced potato here.
  • Olive Oil You will need some to toss the sweet potato chips, and others to make sure they do not stick to the pan.
  • Sea Salt – A flaky salt of the sea adds a nice texture to your chips.

How to make sweet potato chips

  • Prepare. Pre-heat your oven to 400. Slice the sweet potatoes into 1/8 inch thick slices.
  • Season. Sprinkle the olive oil on sweet potato slices until they are evenly coated.
  • Arrange the on the baking sheet . One or two baking sheets should be coated with olive oil. Sprinkle salt on top of the chips and place them onto the baking sheet.
  • Bake. Place the baking sheets in the racks that are furthest from the heat source. Flip the chips halfway through cooking, and bake for 15-20 minutes until crisp.
  • Seasoning and cooling. Remove the baking sheets from the oven, and sprinkle more salt over the top. Enjoy the sweet potato crisps after they have cooled down on the baking tray for 5 minutes.

Tips for Success

  • Use the mandoline. Use a mandoline with a setting of 1/8 inch to get sweet potato chips that are thinly sliced and evenly.
  • Do NOT overcrowd your baking sheet. Be sure to leave space between sweet potato slices to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Watch closely. Due to their thinness, the chips can easily go from crisp to burnt. Check the chips at 10 minutes to make sure they don't burn.
  • If needed, bake longer. After cooling, the chips will become crisper. You can continue to bake the chips for another 5 minutes if they are not crisp after the first 5 minutes. If only the centre is soft, put the pan in the oven for an additional 5 minutes with the door slightly open. The oven should be off at this point, you only need residual heat.

Sweet Potato Chips - Flavour Ideas

You can add any seasoning to the chips as soon as they come out of oven. Here are some suggestions:

  • Spices. Spices like smoked paprika and cumin are great for adding heat to your chips.
  • Herbs. Dried herbs such as rosemary or thyme add a fresh and savoury flavor to sweet potato chips. You can use fresh herbs if you are serving the sweet potato chips immediately.
  • Vegan Cheese. If you are going to eat your chips right away (rather than storing them), sprinkle on some freshly grated vegan Parmesan.

Serving Suggestions

  • Dips. These sweet potato chip pairs well with many dips. Try my vegan ranch dressing, vegan whipped-feta dip or spinach artichoke.
  • Sandwiches. These sweet and salty potato chips are a great side to a vegan BLT or any sandwich.
  • Burgers. These chips go perfectly with vegan quinoa-beet burgers.
  • on their own . These sweet potato chips can be eaten as a snack on their own.

How to store

Store the sweet potato chips at room temperature in an airtight bag or container.

Place them on a baking tray and bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes to get them crispy again.

Ingredients

  • 1 large Sweet Potato dried and washed (about half a pound)
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil + little more to make the cookie sheet look great
  • 1/8 up to 1/4 teaspoon Sea salt and a little more for finishing (if necessary)

Instructions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 400/200.
  • Cut off an inch from both ends of the sweet potato. Use your mandolin to cut the potato into circular chips. I used the 1/8" thickness setting. You can also use a sharp knife to make similar-sized circles if you don't own a mandolin. However, a mandolin will give you a crispier result and a more consistent shape.
  • Toss the sweet potato chips in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, until they are coated.
  • Add a bit more oil to one or two baking sheet (depending on the number of chips). Spread the raw chips out on the baking tray, making sure they do not touch each other or only touch slightly. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  • To prevent burning, place the baking sheets on the racks that are furthest from the heat source/in centre of the oven.
  • Flip the chips halfway and bake for 15-20 minutes.
Check as soon as 10 minutes, since your mandolin may be a little thinner than mine. You don't want the pieces to burn. This size of mandolin was ready in 20 minutes on one. The other mandolin was ready in 15 minutes.
  • As soon as they come out of the oven, sprinkle more salt on them (a pinch is enough - do not go over 1/8 teaspoon). Allow the chips to cool on the baking tray for at least 5 minutes. They crisp up more when they cool, so you might not need that extra time even if they feel soft in the middle.
Bake for an additional 5 minutes if the chips are still not crispy after cooling. You can put the pan in the oven, now turned OFF, with the door slightly ajar for an extra 5 minutes if the centre still needs a bit more time. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can add paprika or garlic powder to the chips as soon as they come out of the oven.
  • Store the sweet potato chips at room temperature in an airtight bag or container. They can be stored for up to three days. Place them on a baking tray and place in a 350 degree oven for 5 minutes to crisp them up again if they become soft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat eggs while following a plant-based lifestyle?

No, eggs are not permissible on a plant-based diet. This diet completely eliminates any animal products like meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. There are many vegan options for traditional egg-centric dishes that have the same flavor and texture as eggs, but they don't rely on animal products. Tofu scrambles or eggs can be made into great breakfast dishes. It can also replace eggs with plant-based protein. For example, chickpea flour or mashed banana can be used for binding in baked goods. Aquafaba (the liquid that comes in chickpea cans) can also substitute for eggs in making meringues. Flaxseed meal or Chia seeds mixed with water can be used as an egg substitute to preserve non-vegan dishes without compromising their taste.

Are plant-based diets less expensive than other diets.

Plant-based diets may not necessarily be more expensive than other diets. A balanced plant-based diet is possible without spending a lot, depending on how many foods you consume. Grains, beans, eggs and nuts can all be very affordable and offer a great source of protein at a lower cost. You can also reduce food costs by planning your meals and buying bulk. Apart from individual ingredients, you can also save money by purchasing ready-to cook plant-based meals.

Is a plant-based diet harmful?

While many people have experienced health benefits from adopting a plant-based diet, any type of diet can be harmful if not managed correctly or with the assistance of a medical professional. People who are transitioning to a plant based diet should be careful about their vitamin and mineral intake. Unbalanced diets without adequate replacements can lead to deficiencies and other health problems. Additionally, following a purely vegan/plant-based lifestyle could mean cutting out valuable sources of protein found in dairy and eggs, which may hinder muscle maintenance. To avoid any potential health problems or nutritional pitfalls, people who follow plant-based diets need to adjust their diets in accordance with their needs.

How To

How do you include more whole foods in a plant-based diet

A plant-based diet will provide you with more nutrients and vitamins. Start by replacing processed meats and animal products with healthy, nutrient-rich options such as seeds and legumes. These foods provide nourishment, so make sure to include whole grains, fruits, veggies, and nuts regularly.

Focus on including a variety in colors in every meal. Red pepper strips, oranges and black beans all contain powerful antioxidants which boost immunity. You can create meal plans based on seasonal produce and include recipes that appeal to every tastebud. Smoothies, stir-fries, and casseroles are all crowd-pleasers.

Whole foods have a much longer shelf life than processed ones, which can be advantageous. Taking an hour per week to plan out meals ahead of time can help you shop confidently for vegan-friendly ingredients that don't spoil easily; this creates less waste and makes shopping trips quicker.

Finally, explore different pathways to create a lasting balanced lifestyle: making delicious vegan baked goods to substituting preferred ingredients like tofu for fish. You can experiment with food and learn new things. Over time, you will be able to manage your food choices without sacrificing taste or nutrition.
