Frequently Asked Questions

What are the health benefits of a plant-based diet

The benefits of a plant-based diet include improved heart health, better digestive health, increased energy levels, reduced stress hormones, and potential environmental protection. Soy-based protein is made from legumes, beans and whole grains. It has higher fiber and lower levels of saturated fat than animal proteins. Plant-based foods are rich in vitamins, minerals as antioxidants and other beneficial compound that can help prevent damage to cells due to inflammation or oxidative injury. This can cause chronic illnesses such heart disease, cancer, and even death. Eating more fruits and vegetables can also increase fiber intake, which helps feed gut bacteria and promotes digestive health. Furthermore, research suggests that a plant-based diet may help improve moods by reducing stress hormones associated with consuming some animal proteins. Additionally, transitioning away from animal proteins is gaining popularity as an alternative way to combat environmental damage caused by factory farming.

Is a diet based on plants the same as a vegan one?

No. A plant-based eating plan is not the exact same as a vegan. A plant based diet is an eating pattern that focuses on whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Although this eating style does not include meat, dairy or other animal products, it may contain small amounts of animal protein. On the other hand, veganism is an ethical lifestyle choice that involves following a completely plant-based diet and avoiding things like clothing or cosmetics made with animal products. Although vegans may also choose to adopt a plant based diet as part their lifestyle, they are separate concepts.

Can I eat eggs while following a plant-based lifestyle?

A plant-based diet does not allow eggs. This diet excludes meat, fish and poultry as well as eggs. Many vegan alternatives to traditional egg-centric dishes have similar taste and texture, but do not rely on animal products. Tofu scrambles and omelets are great breakfast options that have the same appearance and texture as eggs. They also provide plant-based protein. Chickpea flour and mashed banana can be used to replace eggs in baked goods. Aquafaba, which is the liquid in chickpea cans, can also be used as an alternative to eggs when making meringues and other desserts. Flaxseed meal/chia seeds, or water substituted for one egg can help preserve non-vegan recipe without compromising the taste.

Statistics

  • In the United States, poor-quality diet is the most significant predictor of early death, according to an article published in the May 2017 Journal of Geriatric Cardiology. (everydayhealth.com)
  • According to research published, going plant-based can cut grocery bills by $750 a year per person, Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition. (forksoverknives.com)

How To

How to manage social situations on a plant-based diet

Transitioning to a plant-based diet inevitably requires navigating social situations, such as eating out with friends and family. You can be sure to maintain your chosen diet while enjoying delicious meals. Before you dine out, confirm the options. Not all restaurants are vegan-friendly.

If the venue of choice is suitable for vegans, kick-off conversation with friends and family about your preferred food items; this will minimize ordering mistakes at the restaurant eliminating awkward explanations or misunderstandings about your dietary restrictions. Trust your chef when creating vegan dishes. Have a chat with them if needed to better understand your needs.

Make sure you are stocked up on healthy snacks and beverages that don't contain animal products before attending events. Even the smallest gestures in regards to veganism will be appreciated by your non-vegan friends.

Although it may be challenging at first, it is possible to manage social situations while adhering to a vegan lifestyle. Eventually, it becomes second nature; every effort put in results in gradual improvements, so start small and have faith in yourself!
