My family did not go vegan with me but I was adamant about one thing: no dairy. After learning about the horrors of dairy farming, I decided to remove it from my home. We immediately switched to plant-based milk, and dairy butter was replaced with vegan butter.
Butter is one of the easiest dairy alternatives you can replace in your refrigerator. You can easily substitute butter with the quality and quantity of vegan products available today. I promise! You can also bake without it!
This guide on vegan butter will help you with all your butter needs, whether you want to butter your toast in the morning, mix it with sugar to make a dairy-free birthday cake, melt some on a baked potatoes, or spread it on a grilled cheesy.

Whole Food Alternatives for Butter
You can find vegan butter at most major supermarkets today. But before we get into the brands of vegan butter to buy, let's discuss some healthy plant alternatives to butter. Here are two of our favorite vegan butter alternatives.
Coconut oil refined
Use refined coconut oil instead of butter if you want to keep it super simple. You can use this oil to spread on toast that is hot. Coconut oil melts when heated and remains solid at room temperatures. You'll need to add some salt to the toast to give it a buttery feel, as coconut oil does not contain any salt.
What about the coconut flavor? You can get " refine coconut oil" if you don't like coconut. It has no coconut flavor. Unrefined coconut (aka unfiltered) oil is delicious on pancakes or toast with cinnamon and sugar.
Coconut oil can be used in all your favorite recipes, just like butter. You can use it to cook, bake, melt, or dollop on top of a stack of hot pancakes. Coconut oil can be substituted for butter in virtually any recipe!
Avocado (Nature's Butter)
Avocados are often called "Nature's Butter", because you can spread them on toast like butter. It gives off the same savory, delicious and fatty vibe. You can make a healthier version of butter toast by adding a bit of salt and garlic powder. Thanks, nature!
100% Vegan Butter Brands
Earth Balance
It's the dairy-free butter of choice for many vegan families, and it is also one of the most readily available. Earth Balance vegan butter is just as good as butter...many even prefer it! There are dozens of different varieties including whipped and baking butters.
LeGrand
You can use this buttery spread made from coconut oil to butter toast, or make decadent sauces. This Quebec-based firm offers both a sea-salted and an unsalted version that contains organic and non GMO ingredients.
Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Cultured VeganButter
This creamy butter will sooth your palate. You want to use this butter where you can really taste it. It's a great spread for a baguette of high quality or a special toast. Spread it on anything and you'll see a difference. It is organic, non GMO and without palm oil. It's becoming more and more available, you can even find it at Trader Joe's now!
Miyoko’s vegan butter also works well for popcorn. It's a game changer to melt a few tablespoons and drizzle them over freshly popped kernels, along with some sea salt and nutritional yeast. This spread is equally tasty on fresh grilled corn on a cob.
Melt Organic
This creamy and rich organic spread is loved by many. This spread is made with a combination of plant and fruit oils. Melt has also launched vegan buttersticks that are optimized for cooking with oils that do not contain high levels of omega-6 ALAs, such as canola span>, soybean span>, or safflower span>.
Naturli'
This butter has a buttery, rich taste and is made from 100% plants. This butter can be used in the same way as butter, including spreading it on bread and sautéing or baking. This product is made from a mixture of shea and coconut oils. It contains mostly organic ingredients, and it's free of palm oil.
Wayfare Organic Dairy Free Whipped Butter
Recently, Wayfare rebranded itself and has become a popular choice among vegans. The packaging of their products is sleek and modern, and they are very good. It is organic, gluten-free and non-gmo.
Ingredients include: water (neat), butter beans, sunflower oil, sea salt, cultured dextrose and sunflower lecithin. Coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, sea-salt, sunflower lecithin and sunflower dextrose are all included in the recipe.
Wild Creamery Dairy Free Oat Butter Alternative (European Style Butter Alternative).
Wildbrine, a vegan brand on the rise, was known originally for its kimchi. They've also recently expanded to include a line of dairy free dips, dairy free cream cheese and vegan butter.
Wild Creamery's plant-based butter contains coconut oil, water and cashews. It also contains yams, sea salt, cabbages, oats and cultures of lactobacillus.
The Cultured kitchen Better Buttah
This is a smaller brand on the list. You'll only find it in certain natural food stores and areas of the United States.
Original butter ingredients are simple: water, turmeric and Himalayan salt, plus sunflower oil and sustainable palm oil. That's it!
There are also several other fun flavors, such as garlic chive and a cinnamon date vanilla butter. Delicious.
Butter Brands with Vegan Options
Smart Balance Vegan Butter. (Most butters from Smart Balance aren't vegan! )
The dairy-free Smart Balance butter has been available for years and can be found in most supermarkets.
I can't believe it's not butter It's vegan
Recently, this renowned brand released a vegan butter spread. It is 100% non-dairy, and Vegan Action Certified.
Country Crock Plant Butter
Country Crock, a long-standing butter brand, has finally released a dairy free butter! It is available in many U.S. grocery stores.
Nutiva Buttery Coconut Oil
A versatile cooking oil that can be used for a variety of purposes. It also makes a tasty butter substitute.
Land O Lakes Vegan butter (Plant-based Creamy Spread)
We would never support this massive dairy company, which has repeatedly been in the media for its mistreatment and abuse of dairy cattle. Even they now offer their own vegan butter.
What Should You Consider Before Choosing a Vegan Butter
What about palm oil?
Palm oil is likely to be on the ingredient list for many vegan butter alternatives. Many vegan butters use palm oil that is "sustainable" or "ethically" sourced, but some still support palm-oil free options. Here are some great palm-oil free vegan butters.
- Miyoko’s Cultured Butter (coconut milk and cashew oil base)
- Milkadamia Buttery Spread (macadamia nut base)
- Kite Hill Almond Butter
What about plastic? What about plastic?
Many plant-based butters are available in plastic tubs. These tubs are recyclable, but you should wash them first. It's more sustainable to avoid single-use plastics altogether. Here's a vegan butter brand with plastic-free packaging.
- Miyoko’s Cultured Butter (packaged on cardboard)
What is the best organic vegan butter?
First, a big round of applause for you! Some of the brands above offer organic butters, and others have organic plant butters throughout their line. Here are some (of many) vegan organic butter options.
- Miyoko’s Butter (always Organic)
- Earth Balance (organic Butter Options)
You're only left to decide which dairy-free butter you want to try. Enjoy yourself and have fun!
Plant Based Butter Brands that Have Come and Gone
Some vegan butters have entered the market and then disappeared, such as:
- Forager Project has many great dairy-free options.
- Flora Plant Butter
FAQs
Butter is not dairy free. Butter is a dairy food made from cow's milk or cream. It contains significant amounts of milkfat. There are many plant-based alternatives to butter. These include margarine, spreads, and avocado oils. These alternatives provide a similar taste and texture to butter, without any animal-derived ingredients.
On the market, you can find several dairy-free butter alternatives. There are many margarine products that are dairy-free. Many brands also offer vegan butter alternatives. Butter made with vegetable oils like avocado oil, nut oil or coconut oil is a good choice. Earth Balance, Miyoko's and Le Grand make vegan butter. But even butter brands such as Country Crock offer a plant-based butter.
Vegan butter substitutes may offer health benefits compared to butter. However, it depends on the product and its components. Butter is high in saturated fatty acids, which are associated with an increase risk of heart disease. Vegetable oils are used to make many vegan butter substitutes. These oils contain unsaturated fatty acids, which are good for your heart if consumed in moderation. Vegan butter alternatives are cholesterol-free because they are made from plant-based oils, unlike butter derived from animal products. A high intake of cholesterol can lead to heart problems, so it is beneficial to avoid it.

How To
How to deal with social situations when you are on a plant based diet
Transitioning to a plant-based diet inevitably requires navigating social situations, such as eating out with friends and family. To ensure you can stick to your chosen dietary lifestyle while still having enjoyable meals, take proactive steps before dining out. You should confirm which restaurant options you are interested in before going.
Talk to your friends and family about vegan options. This will help you avoid ordering errors at the restaurant, as well as avoiding awkward explanations or misinterpretations about your dietary restrictions. You can have faith in your chef and trust their judgement when making vegan dishes. If necessary, you can chat with them to help them better understand your needs.
When attending events or parties where not everyone is familiar with vegan diets, be sure to fill up beforehand on nutritious snacks or drinks available without animal products - any contribution goes a long way! When your vegan relatives start to incorporate vegan recipes, be sure to acknowledge even the smallest gestures.
Even though it can seem daunting at first, it's possible to make friends and maintain a vegan lifestyle. It becomes second-nature over time. So start small and have faith!
