Enjoy a delicious slice of Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread. This quick bread is easy to make and can be served for breakfast, dessert or snacks.
This recipe is based on the Best Vegan Banana Bread that I have posted. It's as moist and as tender as the original, but with an irresistible twist of chocolate!

Ingredients required (with substitutes)
- Plant Milk – Unsweetened almond milk, cashew, oat, and soy milk are the best, but any plant milk is fine.
- Ground Flaxseeds For this recipe we mix the ground flaxseeds and milk to make an egg substitute.
- Bananas - Ripe, spotty bananas are best! The sweeter your banana bread tastes, the riper they are.
- Vegan Butter – Melted vegan butter gives the bread moisture and substance. Use the same amount unsweetened applesauce for an oil-free version.
- Light Brown Sugar -- This will give the bread a molasses flavor. You can also use coconut sugar or granulated white sugar. If you don't want to use refined sugars, even 1/2 cup maple syrup works!
- All-purpose flour -- This makes the bread soft and fluffy. If you prefer a chocolate banana bread that is a bit more healthy with whole grains you can substitute spelt or white whole-wheat flour. To learn how to bake the bread using gluten-free flour, visit the Questions.
- Cocoa Powder- Both Dutch processed and natural cocoa will work here.
- Baking Soda
- salt
- Vegan Chocolate Chips – I buy dairy-free chocolate chips at Trader Joe's (search for Kirkland semi-sweet chips) and Costco. Guittard and Enjoy Life also make vegan-friendly chips.
Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread
The recipe card below contains the full recipe, including all measurements.
Stir the plant milk with the ground flaxseeds in a measuring cup or glass bowl to make flax eggs. Allow it to sit for five to ten minutes until it thickens.
Use a fork and mash bananas in a bowl. Return to the bowl when you have 1 1/2 cup.
Add the sugar, milk/flax and vegan butter to the bananas. Stir gently. Mix gently.
Add the cocoa powder, salt, baking soda and flour on top of all the wet ingredients. Gently mix until the batter is smooth.
Fold in the remaining chocolate chips (reserve some to sprinkle over the top) and finish by mixing the batter. ).
Pour the batter in the prepared pan, and sprinkle on the chocolate chips. Bake until the toothpick inserted into the center comes clean.
Allow the chocolate banana loaf to cool in its pan, then transfer it to a rack to completely cool. Slice and serve.
Success tips
- Do not overmix the batter, or the bread may become dense. Stir the dry ingredients with a wooden spatula or spoon until the mixture just comes together.
- Add more ingredients to the batter of chocolate banana bread, such as nutmeg or cinnamon, nuts chopped (almonds, walnuts or peanuts), dried cherries or cranberries, vegan toffee or peanut butter chips.
- Allow the banana bread to cool for 30 minutes on a wire rack before cutting. It will become firmer and easier to cut without crumbling or falling apart.
FAQ
According to the blog Tastes Better From scratch, baking bananas in the oven is the fastest way to make them ripen. Bake your bananas in the oven at 300oF until they are soft and their skins have turned black (15-30 minutes). Let them cool before peeling or mashing.
Yes! Make the batter normally, but pour it in a muffin pan lined with paper. The muffins should be baked at 400oF between 20 and 24 minutes, or until the toothpick inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out clean.
You can swap out the all-purpose flour with a high quality gluten-free flour mix. Bob's Red Mill's 1:1 gluten-free flour mix and King Arthur Measure for Measure are my favorite flours to use when making gluten-free banana bread. Make sure that the flour contains xanthan for best results.
Storing
After the banana bread has cooled down to room temperature and been covered with plastic, store it in a cool place for one to two days. You can also store it in the refrigerator to last for a week.
Also, chocolate banana bread freezes very well. Wrap the entire loaf, or individual slices, in aluminum foil and plastic wrap. Then freeze it for up to three months. Thaw it in the refrigerator before serving.

Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup unsweetened soy milk or other plant milk
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds
- 3 medium-large overripe bananas about 1 1/2 cups mashed
- 1/2 cup melted vegan butter or oil
- 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa powder or natural cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup vegan chocolate chips
Instructions
-
Pre-heat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8 1/2 x 41/2 inch or 9 x 5-inch standard loaf pan. I like to line my pans with parchment paper so that they are easy to remove later.
-
Pour the soymilk into a measuring cup or glass bowl, and add the flaxseeds. Stir with a fork. Allow to sit for a couple of minutes so that it can thicken.
-
Mash the bananas in a large bowl with a fork. Pour it into a measuring glass to ensure you have 1 1/2 cups. Then return the bananas to the bowl.
-
Add the milk/flax and brown sugar to the bananas. Stir well. Stir with a large wooden spoon until well combined.
-
Sprinkle baking soda and sea salt over the cocoa powder and flour. Be careful not to overmix. Stir until the ingredients are just combined.
-
Gently fold 3/4 cup of chocolate chips into the batter, leaving the remainder for the top.
-
Pour the mixture into the pan. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over the top. Place the pan on the middle rack and bake it for 50-60 mins, or until the toothpick inserted into the center comes clean.
-
Transfer the cooled cake to a cooling rack after 15 minutes. If possible, let it cool for 30 minutes or more to make it easier to cut. Enjoy!
Notes
-
Oil-free: Use applesauce in place of vegan butter.
-
Gluten-free: Use gluten-free flour mix. You can also use spelt or white whole wheat for a whole grain alternative.
-
Nut-free: Make sure to use a milk that is nut-free and vegan butters are free of nuts.
-
Sugar - Granulated sugar, coconut sugar, or brown sugar can be substituted. You can also substitute 1/2 cup maple syrup.
-
Muffins: Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Divide into muffin liners, and bake for 20-24 min.
-
Leftovers/freezing : Cover any leftover banana bread, and store it at room temperature for 1-2 days. Or you can keep it in the fridge for up to a week. Banana loaf freezes well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are plant-based meals more expensive than other types of diets?
Plant-based diets don't necessarily have to be more expensive than others. It's possible to eat a balanced and plant-based meal without having to spend much, depending on the amount of food consumed. For example, grains, beans, eggs, nuts, and vegetables like potatoes can be quite affordable and provide an excellent protein source for lower overall costs. You can also reduce food costs by planning your meals and buying bulk. In addition to individual ingredients, there are many readymade plant-based meals you can use that will further reduce your grocery expenses.
Can you make muscle using a plant based diet?
Yes, it is possible to build muscle on a plant-based diet. It is possible to build muscle on a vegetarian diet. However, the type of foods one consumes plays the biggest role in muscle strength and size. Plant-based diets can include legumes (beans/lunch/peas), doves/sintan, nuts, nutritional yeast and tofu. A properly balanced, plant-based diet will help you reach your fitness goals. It can also be combined with regular exercise and proper nutrition. It is important to prioritize whole food sources over processed foods that are full of harmful additives or preservatives. Getting adequate amounts of protein daily is essential for consistent gains, so incorporate foods like quinoa, flaxseed oil, nut butter, etc., into your daily meal plan. A nutritionist who specializes in plant-based nutrition is a good choice, regardless of whether you want to build muscle mass or maintain your health.
How can you make the transition to a plant based diet?
Transitioning to a plant-based diet can be intimidating, but it can become an exciting lifestyle change with the proper knowledge and support. These are some tips for transitioning into this type if diet:
- Structuring meals around whole foods rather than processed items for adequate macronutrients, vitamins, and mineral intake.
- We are committed to creating delicious, healthy meals that appeal to everyone.
- Creating a support system like friends, family members, or certified health professionals.
- Explore new ways to increase your enjoyment of good food and keep you healthy.
- Gradually changing habits while also being mindful of nutrient intake.
People can increase their chances to maintain a healthy lifestyle by gradually changing to a plant-based diet.
What are some of the benefits of eating a plant-based diet
A plant-based diet offers many benefits such as improved heart and digestive health. It also provides energy, reduced stress hormones and possible environmental protection. The following plant-based proteins can be found: legumes beans, whole grains and nuts. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, vitamins and other beneficial substances can be found in plant-based diets. These can help to protect against cell damage due to inflammation and oxidative stress, which can lead into chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. Increased fiber intake can promote gut bacteria growth and support digestive health. Research shows that a plant based diet may be able to improve moods by reducing stress hormones. A popular alternative method to combating environmental damage from factory farming is the transitioning away animal proteins.
What happens if you stop eating meat?
You will notice changes in your body when you stop eating meat. Your diet could be more fiber-rich and less saturated than if you switched from animal to plant protein. This change can improve heart health and benefit overall digestive health. Due to better digestion and the elimination inflammatory foods such as animal proteins, you might experience an increase in energy. The ability to reduce stress hormones caused by excessive animal protein consumption may make your moods more stable. The trend towards a plant-based diet is also gaining popularity to counter the environmental damage that factory farming has caused.
Can I eat eggs on a plant-based diet?
No, eggs are not permissible on a plant-based diet. This diet completely eliminates any animal products like meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. However, several vegan substitutes for traditionally egg-centric dishes offer similar flavor and texture without relying on animal products. Tofu scrambles/omelets can be substituted for eggs to make delicious breakfasts. Also, chickpea flour can be used in place of eggs in baking. Additionally, aquafaba (the liquid contained in cans of chickpeas), can be used in place of eggs in baked goods. Flaxseed meal or Chia seeds mixed with water can be used as an egg substitute to preserve non-vegan dishes without compromising their taste.
Can I eat Chicken on a Plant-Based Diet?
No, eating chicken on a plant-based diet is not possible. A plant-based diet prohibits the consumption of all animal products, such as poultry and fish. There are many vegan alternatives that can replace traditional meat-centric dishes. They have the same texture and flavor, however. For example, soy-based meats such as tofu, seitan (wheat gluten), tempeh (fermented soybeans), and mock duck made from mushrooms can mimic the flavor of traditional meats. Vegetarian burgers made out of black beans or quinoa also come close to the taste of beef burgers. There are many tasty alternatives to beef burgers, including coconut bacon strips and eggplant bacon bits, tofu Mayo, veggie hot dogs made of seasoned textured soybean protein, and faux chicken strips using wheat gluten.

How To
How to prepare meals for a plant-based diet
Plant-based meal preparation makes it possible to prepare nutritious, balanced vegan meals ahead. This allows for a more efficient and time-saving approach to cooking. It requires some planning and preparation, but it can help save you time while promoting healthy eating habits. Preparing plant-based meals ahead of time makes it easier for you to keep to your diet. You can have the food ready to go when you're hungry. Additionally, by removing the need to cook from scratch each day, there's more time available for activities such as exercise or relaxation.
Successful plant-based meal prep is all about variety. You can get better nutrition by choosing different ingredients with different colors. For example, you could use spinach for greens, orange/red carrots for orange/reds, or brown rice to make complex carbohydrates. Every meal should have a balanced ratio of fiber and protein. It all depends on the individual's dietary needs.
To optimize meal prep efficiency, consider using a slow cooker or multi-cooker device; batch cooking various ingredients at once by freezing portions of cooked meals; pre-cut vegetables, so they're ready to add to recipes; portion out snacks ahead of time, or keep staples like canned beans and jarred sauces on hand for easy dinners after work.
You can easily prepare meals for a plant diet by following these simple steps. Create a grocery plan based upon the recipes you intend to prepare. If possible, shop at local farmers' markets or health food stores for fresh produce and other quality ingredients. Next, you need to make sure that you allow enough time to prepare your food. These alternatives mean less effort and maximum savings. Food stays fresher longer if it's stored properly.
Plant-based meal prep allows you to eat well, no matter how busy your life may be. Individuals can achieve their nutritional goals by taking the guesswork away from healthy eating.
