Introduce yourself.
Ruibo is my name and I'm an actor and artist based in New York City. I am passionate about nutrition, mental and spiritual wellbeing, and biohacking.
How did you used to eat prior to Carnivore
I was diagnosed with celiac disease and have been gluten-free for the past decade. In an effort to find relief from depression, anxiety and ADHD, I had tried almost every diet and supplementation method available. I tried everything from paleo, primal, plant-based, raw vegan and even a short stupid stint as fruitarian. Before I became a full-fledged carnivore I experimented with plant-based veganism, much to my own detriment.
3) Why did Carnivore appeal to you?
I have always believed that nutrition, biohacking and energy healing are essential for optimal health. In 2010, I weaned off pharmaceutical antidepressants, anxiolytics, and switched to a Paleo/Primal Diet which sustained me for several years. Around 2016/17, I began to have a number of new and troubling health problems. It was a combination of gut permeability and autoimmune problems, hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, as well as a growing list food intolerances, that led me to a serious decline in my physical health, but also in my mental health. I was suicidal and had agoraphobia. I also suffered from recurrent panic attacks and felt debilitating. As a performer, it seemed insurmountable.
I was afraid to ask for help because I was worried it would impact my work, I might be shunned or perceived as weak. I tried to maintain an air of professionalism and a façade. This approach is never successful. It may have appeared that I was erratic or volatile, rude, insensitive, or standoffish. The spiral was for me. I felt powerless because of the desire to be well, to connect to others, and the fear of misunderstanding or being perceived in a certain manner. The level of self-hatred was at an all-time high.
The stress eventually caused my body to break down and I spent my (few!) waking hours researching how to "fix myself". Carnivore was something I'd heard about years before, and it seemed extreme at the time. But at the end of the day I decided to do my research.
4) What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?
Nose to tail. My diet is based on organs and ruminant flesh, which I consume 50/50 cooked or raw. Pork, seafood, and poultry are my staples. I enjoy them, but they don't satisfy me as much. Use butter, tallow and lard liberally. Most coffee is decaf. I am (tragically!) allergic to both yolks and whites of eggs and intolerant to milk. However, I'm working on a protocol to heal my gut and hope to introduce dairy in the future. For now, I'm only supplementing to help with methylation problems.
On most days, I fast naturally 20:4 except when I am on my cycle. In that case I don't have any restrictions. All day I drank electrolyte-filtered water. Lots of sea salt.
5) What are the benefits you have seen since beginning your Carnivore Diet?
The benefits are numerous, but the most notable is the mental clarity that comes with it and the reduction of anxiety and depression. I cannot overstate how much it saved my life. The immediate effects of the treatment were evident within 10 days.
The benefits of the program include improvements in hormonal balance, cycle regulation, gut function (I had always thought that bloating, stomach pain, and blood sugar spikes were normal after meals), and body composition, strength and skin texture. Chronic fatigue, fibroid symptom, and back pain are all gone. For the first time in a long time, I can feel real joy. This is the closest I have ever felt to being "normal" in my adult years.
What are the negatives of a Carnivore Diet?
The negatives of my experience are minor compared to what I have gained. My two would be: 1) I am a foodie, and I love cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. I have had to change my thinking about food and how I cook. It can be difficult to explain or defend the why and how of something.
7) Do You Exercise on the Carnivore Diet? If so, how do you go about it and what are you doing?
Yes, I do not have a routine. I alternate between kettlebells, yoga and bodyweight exercises depending on how my body feels.
8) What advice would you offer to someone who has been considering this diet but isn't ready to make the jump?
You can give yourself a month to see how you feel. You have nothing to lose. You can also read and watch resources and veterans like Judy Cho and Paul Saladino. Join the forums and ask lots of question, seek out support, absorb the success stories. It was the fact that I had to dive into research and science in order to overcome any negative beliefs and "fad" diets and trends.
The concept was not well-known when I first heard about it, and the idea seemed unwise. The more I studied human physiology, learned about my genetic makeup, gut microbiome and how it affects my health, I became convinced that this was the only way to go.
It's really as simple as eating meat and drinking water.
9) Do You Think Carnivore Diet Will Ever Be Accepted As A Mainstream Diet?
It's definitely possible. I believe that as more people adopt an ancestral, holistic approach to their health and share the dramatic improvements they have experienced (in all of the many ways this diet can offer), it is inevitable that others will follow. But for now, it's a matter of following the example. It will take each person to do their own research, and free themselves from dietary dogma. But I think we are on the right track.

We have to keep in mind that everyone is different, even within Carnivore. You have to find out what you like and know that your diet and trajectory will be different from anyone else's. While I encourage you to soak up as much information as possible, keep in mind that your progress will depend on the healing you need. As you learn to listen your body, it'll become easier to customize your diet.
