Introduce yourself.
Laura Spath is a 34-year-old working mom. I lost 120 lbs in 10 months using a Carnivore Diet (the first two months were keto). Since the last six months, I've maintained this weight loss. Our kids (5 and 3 years old) eat clean, whole food diets. My husband also is a carnivore. We feed them meals high in protein and avoid grains, sugars and seed oils.
What did you eat prior to Carnivore?
Before I met Carnivore, my diet consisted of fast-food restaurants and gas stations. When we cooked at home it was usually meat, potatoes, rice and pasta. I would go on "diets", eating salads, chicken breasts, and ice cream. I tried to eat healthy, but would always end up eating ice cream because of a holiday or celebration.
Why did you first try Carnivore?
I was on a Ketogenic diet, but my weight loss was stalling. I started to cut out processed foods and fast. I started to dig deep into Carnivore Research, watching YouTube videos and listening to Podcasts. I learned about the dangers of plant toxins, and the advantages of a meat-only diet high in protein. I liked the idea that I could eat nutrient-dense foods and feel satisfied. And who doesn't like steak? Prior to this, I still struggled with consistency and cravings. The transition to a Carnivore Diet has allowed me to have long-term consistency and eliminate cheat meals.
What is your personal approach to the Carnivore Diet?
I eat only beef and no other meat. A perfect day for me would be 2 pounds of grilled Ribeye at noon and nothing else throughout the day. I've tried adding variety, but it tends to cause me stress or make me regret not eating a steak. When I only eat steak one day a week, I am most satisfied and I have the least cravings.
What are the benefits you have seen since beginning the Carnivore Diet?
The most obvious benefit is weight loss, but there are also benefits in terms of anxiety, stress and digestion. My skin has cleared up and I'm seeing my hair grow in stronger and better.
What are the negatives of the Carnivore Diet?
This way of eating is only effective if you are consistent. You will feel better the longer you follow this diet. You will end up being less healthy if you cheat on weekends or special occasions. This will only work if you are truly committed. You need to have a body that is fat adapted to reap the benefits of eating meats high in fat. "Occasional cheats" will negate those benefits.
If you exercise, how and when?
Before I started going to the gym, I lost 80 pounds. After losing 80 pounds, I felt energized enough to consider working out. I wanted to tone up after my weight loss. I am currently taking a weight-lifting class twice a week at my gym. I would say to first focus on your diet and then worry about exercise.
What advice would you offer someone who has been considering this diet but isn't ready to make the jump?
Just meat (beef), water, and no other food for 30 days. Carnivore diets are great for healing, and for determining how food affects you. You can then experiment with different meats and animal products to find out what suits you best.
Do you believe Carnivore diet will be accepted by the mainstream?
I don't think the only beef diet should be included in the nutritional guidelines. I hope that schools will teach a diet high in protein, without sugars, grains or seed oils.
