Negroni cocktail is a simple 3-ingredient recipe that is both refreshing and comforting. The negroni, with its ruby red color and slightly bittersweet flavor is a popular Italian aperitif that's enjoyed around the world.
In the US, the Negroni was a sensation overnight in the late 2000s. Since then, the classic cocktail has become a staple on all cocktail menus across the United States.
The Negroni is not only a gorgeous red drink, but also incredibly easy to make. The Negroni is made with equal parts of gin sweet vermouth and Campari. This means no additional syrups, juices or shaking is required!
What is in a Negroni
The traditional Negroni is equal parts Campari, gin and sweet vermouth (or red).
- Gin This cocktail needs a simple flavor profile. Fords Gin, a London Dry style gin, is my personal favorite.
- Sweet vermouth Too much botanicals can change the flavor profile. So, go Italian with Cinzano Rosso and Carpano Antico.
- Campari : A blend of herbs, fruits and spices, such as bitter orange, rhubarb ginseng and cascarilla bark. Campari is the bittersweet flavor that gives Negroni its distinctive taste.
- Orange zest is optional: A peel of orange is squeezed gently, orange-side down over the drink right before serving. The peel releases the orange oil. Campari's citrus notes are enhanced by the lovely aroma. Although it is optional, I encourage you to taste the difference.
How to mix up the traditional Negroni
This classic negroni cocktail recipe can be altered, adapted, and tweaked to suit your tastes. Play around with your cocktail creations! Here are some ideas to get your started:
- Adjust bitterness: For a drink that is a bit less bitter, use less Campari. If you prefer a bitter, strong cocktail, then add more Campari to the sweet vermouth.
- You can serve the negroni in a coupe or rocks glass with ice. The ice will further dilute the cocktail and allow you to enjoy it for some time. It becomes stronger when you serve it.
- Lower ABV: For cocktails with a lower alcohol content, swap out the gin and soda water for an Americano cocktail.
- Negroni Fizz Add soda water to the negroni for a Negroni Fizz.
- White Negroni - Use Lillet Blanc in place of sweet vermouth, and Suze in place of Campari.
- Boulevardier Make a punch with whisky instead of gin.
- Negroni Sbagliato : With Prosecco (instead gin). Oh, stunning!
How to Make a Negroni
Shake if you are making a cocktail that contains juice, milk, or any other ingredient like egg whites. Stir if it's just booze.
The classic Negroni is a good example of the second rule. This guideline will ensure that you get a perfect cocktail every time. :
- Stirring: Fill a mixing cup (like a pint-sized glass) with ice 3/4 full. Add 3/4 ounces of each gin and Campari. Stir until it is very cold and strain into your serving glasses.
- Serve with: Add fresh ice if desired. Squeeze an orange peel of 1 inch wide over the glass in order to release its oils. Add a twist to your drink by pinching and turning. Cheers!
How to Make a Pitcher Of Negronis
Batches of drinks like negronis can be made easily. Just stir them together in a large pitcher, and place it next to a bucket with ice. Set out a few glasses and let guests fill them at their own pace. A pitcher is good for 8 people.
- Combine 8 ounces of each gin and sweet vermouth. Pour over ice and stir to combine.
How Does a Negroni Tasting?
What is the result? Negronis are well balanced, refreshing bittersweet drinks with hints of fruit and spice.
Campari is the star of this cocktail. The gin's herbal notes and sweet vermouth's spicy kick are all present. But it's the Campari which takes the lead.
What to serve with Negronis
Negronis are a great way to get your appetite going. It's best to serve them with small bites or appetizers before the main meal.
In the summer, when melons are sweeter and juicier, serve with Prosciutto e Melone. Serve with Roasted Artichokes for the herbal Negronis, and Aioli as a dip. Keep it simple and classic by serving a Cheese and Charcuterie board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drink alcohol while on the Mediterranean diet
Yes, alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation as part a Mediterranean diet. Limit your alcohol intake to one glass per day for women and two for men. Drinks that are suitable include beer, dry wines, and spirits made from natural ingredients, such as vodka, whiskey, brandy, and gin. Heavy spirits like cocktails should be avoided due to their high sugar content. Incorporating water or herbal teas into your daily diet can help you stay hydrated and reduce your desire for sugary drinks.
Can the Mediterranean Diet be vegetarian
Yes, the Mediterranean Diet can be adapted to be vegetarian. To follow this eating pattern, vegetarians can avoid meat, poultry, and fish. You can choose from a variety of plant-based protein sources, such as legumes, nuts and seeds. These are all staples in the Mediterranean Diet. Healthy fats such as olive oils, olives, or avocados can help to replace the protein source. In order to obtain vitamins and minerals while living a vegetarian lifestyle, you can add tofu or soy milk to your diet. For dessert, you can substitute ice cream by frozen banana slices or mashing beans on toast.
Is the Mediterranean Diet suitable for people suffering from certain health conditions like diabetes?
The Mediterranean Diet is suitable for people suffering from certain conditions such as diabetes. This diet emphasizes whole foods, limits refined sugars and carbs, and focuses on healthy fats over butter or lard. This reduces the chance of developing diabetes in people who are not already living with it, and helps to control blood sugar levels for those with diabetes. Additionally, incorporating light physical activity into this eating style can help regulate and stabilize blood sugar levels with regular exercise! Healthy food swaps such as replacing white bread with whole-grain bread or adding nuts to salads instead of crackers can contribute to a balanced meal plan suitable for managing symptoms of many different health conditions.
Is the Mediterranean diet mostly plant-based or is it?
Yes, the Mediterranean Diet relies mainly on plants. This ancient diet is primarily based on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, legumes (nuts), and seeds. Red meat, poultry, and fish can also be found in smaller amounts due to their provenance around the Mediterranean Sea. If you choose to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, these protein sources can be eliminated. Tofu and soy yogurt are excellent options for additional nutrition and protein.

A Mediterranean diet can improve your quality of life and overall health. Healthy fats, whole grains and legumes are all part of this eating plan. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also included in the daily meals. You can reap the health benefits of eating this way, such as improved blood lipids, better glucose control and reduced risk for certain types and cancers, better cardiac health and cognitive function, and weight management. Incorporating Mediterranean-inspired foods into your diet can be done with ease by following several helpful tips:
- Switch to nutrient-dense foods like hummus or traditional greens such as beans and chips in place of high-calorie snacks.
- Learn how spices and other ingredients can be used to enhance the variety of your diet.
- Include grains, legumes, or high-fiber food items to increase your satisfaction.
- For added nutrition, consume moderate amounts of yogurt, cheese, milk, and milk throughout your day.
- Instead of traditional oils, you can use olive oil as your primary cooking fat.
- Finally, occasionally enjoy a red wine to complete the Mediterranean experience.
It takes time and effort to change your daily meal plan to adopt Mediterranean eating patterns. They can reap potential health benefits while still enjoying the food they eat. Combining this with regular, vigorous exercise could lead to even greater short-term benefits and long-term health benefits. This includes the prevention of chronic diseases, better body composition, and improved overall health.
