To be healthy, every individual needs certain inputs: nutrition, sleep, social connections, and the one that we're discussing today, exercise.
The Primal Blueprint is a master plan that focuses on creating the strongest, fittest, dynamic and most enjoyable life possible. All my readers deserve a life lived well to the end. You need to start young in order to achieve this goal.
Everyone knows how they can move. Exercise is important. We have all heard to aim for 10,000 steps per day, build core strength and use our gym memberships. Many, or even most people, do not exercise enough. They either move too little, or too much. They also don't exercise in a variety of ways that will help them achieve their fitness and longevity goals.
What does it mean to move Primally?
The human body is designed to move. To be active. Physically manipulate our environment.
Of course, our ancestors had no choice. They did not worry about being strong or physically capable. They were fit because they lived in a harsh environment where everything was hard-earned: food, shelter, water and transportation. Life is easier now, at the very least in terms of physical demands. Modern people do have to be fit.
I created the Primal Blueprint by observing how our ancestors moved and what qualities they embodied. I then formulated what I found:
- The human body is designed to move.
- The body should move in all directions: push, pull and lift. Jump, spring, sprint or throw.
- To survive, our ancestors needed to be strong and powerful. They also had to have a high strength-to body weight ratio, as well as a lot of endurance.
I have formulated the following laws for the Primal Blueprint movement.
The Primal Blueprint Movement laws
Four of the ten Primal Laws address how you should move. It is that important.
Primal Law 3: Move often.
Our ancestors moved around at a low-level aerobic rate, which is what modern exercise physiologists would call "low-level activity". They hunted and gathered food, foraged wild plants, wandered about, scouted the area, migrated to new areas, climbed and crawled. The low-level activity caused their genes to produce strong muscles, joints, bones and a robust cardiovascular systems. They also burned fat as fuel.
The sedentary lifestyle we lead today is as far away from this ideal as it can be. Our genes still require us to be active, but at a slower pace. This is one of the biggest differences between modern and Primal life from a chronic-health perspective.
Here's more information about Primal Law #3.
Primal Law #4 - Do not lift heavy objects
Until relatively recently, it was impossible to move heavy objects like stone, wood, water and animals that were killed miles away from home. When you do resistance training, which is moving heavy objects, it makes you stronger.
It's not just about being strong if you want an attractive body or to succeed in sports, though those are both good reasons. Muscle tissue is a metabolically active and major storage site for glucose (glycogen). A lack of muscle can increase the risk of insulin resistance and metabolic disorders. Frailty and a weak musculoskeletal systems are closely linked to mortality.
Here's more information about Primal Law #4.
Primal Law #5 - Sprint every now and then.
The genes are sent a strong signal when you go all out. This is because it was a matter of survival for the primal humans. The hormonal cascade that results and the adaptations it brings to the body make it more fit and resilient.
Here's more information about Primal Law #5.
Primal Law #7 - Play.
(Yes, I skipped Law #6. The Primal Life Laws cover it. )
Hunter-gatherers worked less and had more time to themselves than the typical 40-hour American worker. After the day's harvest was completed, and all the roots, shoots and nuts and berries were gathered, we can see that our ancestors engaged in social interactions, which are what we would call "play" today.
It was a way to strengthen social ties and establish a social hierarchy. It also helped sort out social hierarchy. It was important to play to release endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in our brain, and to reduce any stress caused by life-threatening situations.
Play is still important for both kids and adults.
Here's more information about Primal Law No. 7.
Put the Movement Laws in Action
The Primal Fitness Pyramid is a visual guide to how I believe the average person should exercise in a week (or more).
There's a lot of space to explore your own personal movement style within this framework. The Primal Blueprint is endlessly malleable and infinitely scalable. Your goal might be to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. You might want to spend the entire day at Disney World on your feet with your family. You may love CrossFit, or want to run your very first 5k. You may be required to meet certain fitness standards by your employer. You may want to be healthy and live a long life but never go to a gym. All of these are valid. As I have said before, you should do the exercise that you are most likely to stick with.
The Primal Blueprint's Movement Laws will help you achieve your fitness goals and avoid the pitfalls associated with chronic cardio or other forms of overly demanding exercise.
These laws of movement are the best way to get lean, functionally fit, and enjoy life. They require minimal effort, time, sacrifice, and pain. But, most importantly, they provide maximum enjoyment, fun, and ease. This is not the only way to stay fit but it may be the most effective and enjoyable.
The Primal blueprint and book by the same title offer a framework to achieve your best health, vitality and longevity. The book is divided into 10 Primal Laws that are based on anthropology and sociology as well as biology, psychology, common sense, and biology. These laws describe diet, lifestyle, and movement practices that promote optimal gene expression. They are the practices that allowed humans to thrive over hundreds of thousands years but that many people today struggle to achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to eat popcorn when following the Paleo lifestyle?
When exploring the Paleo diet it is important to be informed about the best snacks and meals that fit into the plan. Popcorn is a popular food that can prove difficult to include. Can you eat popcorn on a Paleo diet
The answer isn't simple--while it's made from corn, a vegetable that doesn't adhere to Paleo guidelines, it isn't inherently unhealthy either. Traditional popcorn is not recommended for Paleo-followers due to its high-carbohydrate content.
However, this eating plan allows for some other options. Coconut milk popsicles are a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without compromising your nutritional intake. If you prefer making your own snacks, almond flour and cauliflower crackers are great options!
No matter what snacks you choose, make sure to read all labels before buying packaged foods. This will ensure that you don't compromise your nutritional goals by eating foods with refined carbs or added sugar.
Consider all possible options when choosing which snacks you will eat Paleo-friendly, even popcorn. This will allow you to choose the best snack option that fits into your daily meal plan.
Can you gain weight on a paleo diet?
Unwavering in your approach and proactivity is the key to success. Carefully consider your diet and lifestyle, adeptly making tweaks to foster long-term nutritional balance and lasting results. Understanding the principles of paleo is essential to help you determine whether or not it is suitable for you.
You may find that a paleo diet is able to help you achieve your fitness goals, depending on how strict and what foods you choose from each group. For those who want to lose weight, this approach requires the same coaching as for losing weight.
Once you have practical meals tailored to fit an appropriate macronutrient profile that meets both your caloric needs and daily physical activity levels, dramatic tangible results will be achieved--like gaining pounds naturally on a paleo plan.
If need be, consider increasing portion sizes accordingly by adding more fatty items like nuts or higher-carb vegetable sides such as sweet potato; doing so in moderation should help promote periodic gains in size without imparting too many processed ingredients like refined sugars or flours into the diet regimen.
Balanced paleo will lead to optimal health regardless of whether you are looking for fat loss or muscle build. You must ensure that nutrition is your northstar. This will allow everyone to achieve their goals while staying true to their nutrition plan.
Who Shouldn't Follow the Paleo Diet
Paleo Diet shouldn't be used by anyone looking for a quick fix. This eating plan doesn't require drastic lifestyle changes or quick fixes. Some people who focus on weight loss may not see results in a few months.
The Paleo Diet also isn't ideal for anyone with any kind of dietary restrictions or food allergies--particularly gluten avoidance, as some grains aren't appropriate choices. Additionally, people sensitive to high protein intakes might feel overwhelmed by the amount found in many Paleolithic dishes.
People who bounce between fad diets will not benefit. It is better to stick with the same routine, even though it may mean changing ingredients slightly. You must be committed to the Paleo Diet. People who are constantly changing their diets should reconsider.
Finally, those who don't have access to natural foods or time to prepare meals daily may miss out on reaping the rewards of this lifestyle as convenience foods are typically not part of this eating plan.
How to make the Paleo Diet Work for You?
Paleo is more than a diet. It's about changing your life from the inside out, covering everything from nutrition and fitness to relationships, career, and mental health. It takes effort and dedication to ensure that it fits in your schedule.
Understanding what foods are included in the paleo diet and which alternatives can be substituted is key when making this transition. Many people find that meal planning, shopping for food, and researching recipes become an important part of their weekly life. For those following strict paleo guidelines, every detail is important. Therefore, you will need to thoroughly inspect each item before adding it to your shopping cart.
For those on-the-go lifestyles, it makes sense to find consistent ways to make eating healthy easier while supplementing with snacks or meals prepared ahead of time. Although takeout may seem like a good option, many restaurants offer gluten-free or low-carb options. Creativity and premeditation allow you to have a night out without compromising your goals!
It's important not to let it overwhelm you. However, planning will help you stick to the paleo diet and make it easy to incorporate delicious gourmet recipes into your daily life. You should prioritize nutrient-dense items over processed foods. This will ensure that you are energized throughout your day by allowing for Paleo-approved treats!
How to Make the Paleo Diet Work for You?
It doesn't take much to discover the secrets of success on the Paleo Diet. With the right guidance, it is possible to live a healthier lifestyle that makes you feel great.
Paleo experts offer helpful tips that will make it easy to experiment with new foods and find the best ingredients for your body.
It is an exciting adventure to learn how to make Paleo Diet work well for you. You may be able to explore different ideas and make small adjustments over time to help you live a better life.
Start by looking at which foods contain valuable nutrients. This will improve your energy, digestion, mood, physical function, and overall health. Staying motivated is as simple as learning which nutrition choices best suit your body. This will help you avoid avoiding certain food groups.
Achieving balance through consistency involves understanding moderation in portions and being mindful of when enough is enough without guilt. It's not about changing your patterns; it's about creating lasting changes.
Realizing the transformational power of eating a nutritious diet is something that should not be overlooked or undervalued. Taking charge of what goes into your body has immense power, so take control today and show yourself once again why the Paleo Diet is worth it!
What is the 85/15 rule in paleo?
Do you feel like your paleo diet isn't quite cutting it? You're not the only one. This is why so many people have adopted 85/15, the rule of paleo--the idea that you should aim for 85 percent clean eating unless your fitness level or your competitions are high.
This means that even if you indulge in food that isn't strictly paleo, it doesn't mean that your efforts up to now have been lost. Healthy indulgences of 15% are kept in check so that it's balanced and satisfying that you won’t slip from your healthy lifestyle.
It's easy to get sidetracked by a diet. This rule helps to ensure that slips don't derail your fitness journey. It's for everyone, no matter how advanced they are in their fitness or wellness.
The 85/15 rule may not be part of the traditional paleo guidelines, but as long as you stay committed throughout the week and eat mostly whole foods and unprocessed ingredients, allowing yourself some wiggle room can be beneficial in its way over time.

How To
How do I incorporate exercise into a paleo diet?
For optimal health, it is important to strike the right balance between nutrition and exercise. Even though it is possible to achieve this balance, it can be challenging to keep it up, especially if your diet restricts you. Paleo can be difficult because it excludes certain food groups such as grains, dairy, legumes, and so on.
The good news? Incorporating exercise into your paleo lifestyle isn't as daunting as it would seem. It's important to consider how you can make your day more active. This could include taking a 10-minute stroll after lunch or dinner, or standing up at regular intervals for those who sit for long periods.
Another option is high-intensity intertraining (HIIT). This involves switching between intense activity and short rest breaks. This workout lasts less than 20 minutes and doubles up for strength training. It targets all major muscle groups efficiently and quickly. Burpees, jumping jacks, and squats are all HIIT moves that are simple enough for beginners, but difficult enough for more advanced exercisers.
Mixing up endurance-type activities such a running, cycling or swimming is ok. These activities will burn calories and serve as walking mental health benefits in the form of stress relief and endorphin boosts (talk about multi-tasking!). These are great strategies for adding exercise to a paleo diet and nourishing your body with healthy food choices.
