1. The production of meat is a resource-intensive process

The production of meat is a huge undertaking that requires a lot of water, land, oil, fertilizer and other resources. According to the Environmental Protection Agency it takes 1,100 gallons to produce two pounds of chicken. This is not an entire chicken. It's enough to fill 25 bathtubs.

2. Animal agriculture produces huge amounts of greenhouse gasses

According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, animal agribusiness accounts for 15 percent of human-induced greenhouse gases. Plant-based food, on the contrary, has a lower carbon footprint than animal foods.

3. The production of meat is not an efficient way to use resources

The amount of food currently fed to animals in agriculture could feed 4 billion additional people. Oxfam, an international relief organization, estimates that 795 millions people worldwide suffer from malnutrition. We're feeding farm animals more grain than we could possibly use to combat global malnutrition.

4. Fishing industry has a major impact on our oceans

The fishing trawlers destroy everything they come across, including the marine mammals that live in our oceans.

The National Resources Defense Council estimates that fishing vessels accidentally kill 650,000 marine mammal species (including dolphins and whales) every year. Comparatively, the commercial whaling industry kills around 2,000 animals. Whales are not threatened by whaling vessels, but rather by our fish consumption.

5. Eating a diet based on plants helps wildlife

According to the Centre for Biological Diversity, 80 percent of US agricultural land is used for raising animals and feeding them. Natural vegetation is removed to grow crops for farm animals. This destroys delicate ecosystems and native species, as well as natural habitats.
