Vegan Toilet Cleaning Checklist
It is not fun to clean the toilet, also known as "polishing the privy". Nobody wants to clean the toilet. This household chore is relatively easy to complete if you follow the right steps (and order). Sounds a bit finicky to you? Doing it this way can save you a lot of time and frustration.
Super Bowl soak: Jump right in and scrub the toilet using toilet cleaner. The cleaner will have more time to work while you focus on other parts.
Wipe out (and in!) ): Using an all-purpose or bathroom cleaner and reusable cloths, wipe down the outside of the entire toilet (including the top lid, seat lid, handle, underneath lid, top of toilet bowl, and bottom areas of toilet) from the not-so-dirty to the downright-disgusting.
Flooring It: The bathroom may have a bad smell even after cleaning because of urine that has dried around the bottom of your toilet. Spray undiluted white vinegar (our favorite) or Biokleen Bac Out. Spray undiluted distilled white vinegar or Biokleen's Bac Out (our favorite!) around the base and let it sit for atleast 30 minutes. You'll notice the difference if you wipe up properly.
Do the Extra Mile: For those who are really committed, you can clean the walls, floor, and toilet seat well. You could also add a roll of eco-friendly paper like Reel Paper or Betterway.
What to Put in a Toilet Caddy
You may have never thought about a toilet cleaner caddy. You should definitely consider one! It's like trying to lug all your groceries from the car into the house with . It's possible that you don't want to admit it, but the amount of cleaning supplies is just too much. A caddy not only helps you save time but also improves your mood. You can add these things to your caddy:
- Toilet Brush (Silicone or Natural)
- Toilet Cleaning Stone
- Use reusable cloths or Swedish Dishcloths (compostable paper towel or rags).
- Toilet Cleaner (see below for recipe or links)
- Rubber Gloves and Reusable Gloves
- Wet Bags or Biodegradable Garbage (for storing used clothes for later laundering)
For best results, we recommend that you clean the toilet thoroughly at least once a week.
Toilet Cleaning Hacks
We love hacks! We love hacks, especially ones that help us get the job done. Share your favorites in the comments! Here are some of the most popular ones:
- Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove heavy stains. Pour a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the toilet bowl. Swish it around (including under the rim) and allow to sit for at least 30 minutes.
- Did you know some brands of baking soda test on animals before they are sold? Arm & Hammer, a popular brand, is not cruelty-free. Choose vegan brands like Bob's Red Mill or Relative Foods.
- A pumice rock is the perfect solution for hard-water rings or stains. To avoid scratches, make sure you thoroughly wet the stone as well as the toilet prior to scrubbing.
Animal-Free Toilet Bowl Cleaning Products
Not everyone loves DIY recipes like we do (wahhh? Sometimes a commercially made product is the better option. We're happy to use a ready-made product if it makes life easier. It's important to use whatever helps you clean that not-so-fresh toilet bowl. These cleaners are non-toxic and will clean your toilet bowl like no one's business.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can a Plant-Based Diet help boost your Health?
A plant-based lifestyle can offer many health benefits. Consuming more plant-based food and less animal products is linked to lower rates of chronic diseases like stroke, heart disease and diabetes. Plant-based diets contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds that can help protect against inflammation and oxidative damage. Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables, beans, and legumes has been proven beneficial due to the presence of dietary fiber, which feeds gut bacteria and helps maintain digestive health. Plant-based meal options are often low in saturated oils, which can increase blood cholesterol. Research suggests that a plant-based diet can reduce the symptoms of common mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Long-term satisfaction can be achieved by consuming a mixture of plant-based proteins as well as healthy fats like avocados and nuts.
Can you get enough protein on a plant-based diet?
Yes, you can get enough protein on a plant-based diet. A variety of legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, as well as grains provide amino acid to help you build muscle and stay healthy. Tofu, and other soybean products, contain all 9 essential amino acid that the body cannot make. Also, vegetables such a spinach, broccoli and kale are rich in protein. They can be combined with legumes to provide the required amount of protein for adequate nutrition. Plant-based protein are better for long-term satisfaction and support longer-lasting satiety. Flaxseeds and chia seeds, walnuts and hemp seeds all contain omega-3 fatty acid, which can be used to balance the other nutrients in a plant-based diet.
What is an alternative to meat as a source of protein?
Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet. You can find it in both animal and plant-based foods. There are many plant-based protein sources, including legumes, nuts and seed, grains, quinoa and tofu. The high amount of antioxidants in many fruits or vegetables can have anti-inflammatory effects. Oat and almond milk, two dairy substitutes that are fortified, provide a plant-based alternative to cow’s milk. Alternatives like pumpkin seeds and nutritional yeast can lend cheesy flavor to dishes while providing more micronutrients than their animal-based equivalents. Various vegan protein powders suitable for shakes or smoothies are also great for adding extra nutrition without consuming animal products.
Statistics
- Another found that following a diet rich in plant foods and lower in animal foods was associated with a 16 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 31 to 32 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. (everydayhealth.com)
- According to research published, going plant-based can cut grocery bills by $750 a year per person, Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition. (forksoverknives.com)
