Essential oils have been a passion of mine for the past year. When I was suffering from daily nausea due to an autoimmune condition, a friend suggested that I rub peppermint oil on both my belly and wrists. I felt immediately a sense of calm and a soothing effect.
Since then, I have been fascinated by these mysterious elements of plants and I am excited to share what I discovered with you today.

What are essential oils?
Did you ever stop to smell a flower? Yes! You're inhaling a small amount of essential oils, which are volatile aromatic compounds found within plants. These phytochemicals are highly concentrated and give plants distinctive scents that promote pollination and protect them from harm.
Humans are skilled creatures. We have been using plant-derived essential oils to treat and soothe our ailments for thousands of years. We are now able to extract these powerful oils from plants, roots, flowers and seeds.
It's easy to find essential oils in almost every natural food store, or just click a few buttons online. You can enjoy the health benefits of essential oils such as lavender, lemon, peppermint, and others (three of my favorite).
How to Use Essential Oils
There are thousands of essential oil compounds. Some of the most popular include Cedarwood, Cinnamon Bark and Clary Sage.
Every oil is unique and has its own benefits and uses. These are some of the most common uses:
- You can diffuse your essential oils in the air, which is safer than burning candles.
- You can apply oils directly to the skin with or without carrier oil. The most popular spots are the neck, abdomen, and bottom of the feet.
- Consume them orally, by adding them into beverages or to recipes
- Use as an ingredient in DIY beauty products or household cleaners
- As a natural Poo-Pourri, you can dribble a few drops into your toilet bowl.
- As soothing aromatherapy, add the oils to your bath.
- Use them to repel insects naturally
...you get it. There are many uses for essential oils, and we are starting to see them in a variety of mainstream products, from toothpastes to bath bombs. Essential oils are a welcome replacement for synthetic chemical fragrances. Let's now look at the many benefits that essential oils can offer.
Essential Oils: The Benefits
You're almost at bedtime and you apply some lavender oil to your feet before you go to sleep. The lights are dimmed, the electronics are turned off, and you focus on you for a few minutes. It's clear that routines such as these can ease our minds and improve our mental health. This is the first benefit.
Essential oils are also great for cleaning your home. Many oils possess antibacterial properties, making them ideal to use in household cleaners. They can be used in beauty and bath products as they have a pleasant scent that acts as a natural preservative.
Many of the claims regarding the health benefits of essential oils are speculative. This is partly because it's hard to tell the difference between genuine therapeutic effects and placebo effects. It's easy to believe that something will have an effect, and then it does. However, I'll share some unsubstantiated theories that I discovered in my research. The use of essential oils may be beneficial:
- Relax your body
- Calm, focus or stimulate your mind
- Reduce stress
- Relax sore muscles
- Allergy to pain
- Cleanse the air
- Protect your home from harmful bacteria
...and more. No matter how accurate these claims are, essential oils smell wonderful. It's never a bad idea to take a few extra minutes to enjoy the aromas.
Essential Oil Brands
It can be difficult to find essential oil brands. Although many essential oils are labeled as "all-natural", they often contain a chemical scent or are heavily diluted with cheap base oils. These essential oils, which are known for being safe for the environment, are of high quality, pure, vegan, and cruelty-free.
Art Naturals
Art Naturals oils are high-quality, affordable, and organic. They are also 100% pure therapeutic grade. There are at least 17 essential oils available and two signature blends: Chi and Zen. Their Baby Beginnings Oil Set is a favorite of ours.
Aura Cacia
The company is ethical and sustainable and offers certified organic and nonorganic pure essential oils as well as blends. There are almost 35 organic essential oils in their collection, along with many other unique blends. They also offer a wide range of base oils such as sweet almond and jojoba. What do we love most about Aura Cacia? They are a great value for the price!
Cliganic
Cliganic, a San Francisco Bay-based company that sells pure essential oils, guarantees they are organic and non-GMO. You can buy singles and blends as well as your own diffusers. Cliganic offers a complete range of aromatherapy sets that are so tempting.
Mountain Rose Herbs
Mountain Rose Herbs is a great brand that offers more than just a large list of essential oils (including organic). The company offers tutorials, recipes, herbal education, as well as many other tools to anyone who is interested in all things plant-based. The quality of their pure essential oils is exceptional and well worth the investment.
Get it now
A brand that is easy to find and affordable, with a large selection of pure essential oils as well as carrier oils and other products for your body. This company categorizes essential oils according to their purpose on their website. We love that they do this, such as Relaxation, Romance or Energize. This is a great place to start with essential oils.
Plantlife
Plantlife products are 100% pure, gluten-free and GMO-free. On their website, the company offers singles, sets and blends as well as diffusers and carrier oils. Their focus is on fresh herbs and rich oils. They are known for their Calm, Well-being, and Uplift mists.
Plant Therapy
Plant Therapy's commitment to natural living is what makes them so special. The company not only stocks organic essential oils and accessories but also offers an Oil of the month club. The online Resource Center has a wealth of resources, including videos, tutorials, coloring pages, and classes.
Where can I find the best essential oil diffuser?
There are many options available if you're looking for an essential oil diffuser. This is the ZAQ diffuser that I use. It's completely silent, fades between beautiful glowing colors and sends a soft, mist of essential oils into the air. This diffuser brings a relaxing aroma along with all the benefits of the oils.
The Compassionate chick's Guide To DIY Beauty is a great book that Sunny, my dear friend, wrote and which I had the privilege of photographing.
ZAQ diffusers generously sponsored this article. All opinions and thoughts expressed in this article are entirely ours. Only companies we love are featured in this article.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a diet based on plants the same as a vegan one?
A plant-based diet does not mean you have to eat vegan. A plant-based diet consists of an eating plan that emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts. This eating pattern generally reduces or eliminates animal products like meat and dairy. However, some animal proteins may still be consumed. Veganism, on the other hand is a lifestyle choice that focuses exclusively on plant-based nutrition and avoids products such as clothing or cosmetics made from animal products. Even though vegans may opt to follow a plantbased diet as part or their lifestyle, they are different concepts.
Can children follow a plant based diet?
Adults are increasingly turning to plant-based diets for their many health benefits. But parents might be wondering if a diet based on plants is safe for their kids. Children can still eat a plant-based food plan if they are well-planned and meet their nutritional needs.
A plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients necessary for children to grow and thrive. However, children need to be able to get sufficient iron, calcium (vitamin D), vitamin B12, and protein. Good sources of protein include beans, lentils and tofu. Iron is necessary for healthy blood cells and can be found in leafy greens, beans, and fortified cereals. Fortified plant milk and calcium-set tofu are good sources of calcium. Vitamin D is vital for bone health. You can get it from fortified milk, sunlight exposure, and fortified plant milk. Vitamin B12, vital for healthy nerves as well as blood cells, is only available in animal products. Children who consume a plant-based meal may need to take a supplement with vitamin B12.
It is also important to ensure that children on a plant-based diet consume enough calories to meet their energy needs. Whole foods should include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Children may need to eat more frequently or consume larger portions to meet their energy needs.
Parents are advised to consult with a registered nutritionist or a healthcare professional in order to ensure their child's nutritional needs are met. They can help you plan meals, provide nutritional advice, and determine the right portion size for your child.
It is possible for children to safely eat a plant-based diet, provided it meets their nutritional needs. Parents can provide their children with a healthy and nutritious plant-based diet with proper planning and guidance from a healthcare professional or registered dietitian.
How can a Plant-Based Diet help boost your Health?
A plant-based lifestyle can offer many health benefits. Consuming more plant-based food and less animal products is linked to lower rates of chronic diseases like stroke, heart disease and diabetes. Plant-based diets are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These beneficial compounds can protect against inflammation and prevent oxidative damage. A high intake of fruits, vegetables and legumes has been proven to have many benefits. The dietary fiber helps feed the gut bacteria and improves digestion. A lot of plant-based meals are low in saturated fats which may increase blood cholesterol. A number of studies have found that plant-based diets can reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. The combination of plant proteins and healthy fats from nuts or avocados can increase long-term satisfaction between meals.
Are there any celebrities or athletes that advocate for a plant diet?
Yes, celebrities and athletes are big supporters of a plant based diet. Some of these include Kyrie, the NBA's player, Lewis Hamilton, the Formula 1 World Champion, Natalie Portman and Kenneth Farrow who are all NFL running backs. Each has embraced the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle for their reasons and achieved impressive results as an athlete or in their artistic endeavours. Actress Alicia Silverstone even wrote a book about her experiences with the vegan lifestyle, Kind Diet. Professional tennis player Novak Djokovic has credited his career successes to his unconventional habit of eating primarily organic vegan foods during competitions; his stats have drastically improved since he adopted this regimen. These four professional athletes share some remarkable qualities. They all mention a higher energy level, faster recovery from injury, and better overall health. Plant-based diets can prove to be a useful tool in improving athleticism.

How To
How do you meal prep for a plant-based diet
Preparing vegan meals from plants allows you to cook your meals quickly and efficiently. Although it requires planning and preparation, it can save you time and promote healthy eating habits. Prepping plant-based meals in advance makes it easier to stick to your diet, as the food is already ready when you need something healthy and delicious. Also, you can save time and make it easier to exercise or relax by not having the food prepared from scratch each day.
It is important to prioritize variety and focus on whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. This will make it easier to prepare plant-based meals. Try selecting different ingredients each week with various colors for better nutrition - for example, spinach for greens, purple carrots for orange/reds and brown rice for complex carbohydrates. Every meal should have a balanced ratio of fiber and protein. It all depends on the individual's dietary needs.
A multi-cooker or slow cooker can be used to maximize meal prep efficiency. You can freeze portions of cooked meals in one batch, and pre-cut vegetables to make it easy to add them to recipes.
With a few simple steps, meal prepping for a plant-based diet can be an easy and enjoyable experience. You can start by making a grocery store list of the recipes you will be using. Local farmers' markets and health food shops are great places to find fresh produce, as well as other quality ingredients. Next, you need to make sure that you allow enough time to prepare your food. These alternatives mean less effort and maximum savings. Food stays fresher longer if it's stored properly.
Plant-based meal planning allows for healthy eating, regardless of how busy one is. Individuals will be able to achieve their nutrition goals faster if they take the guesswork out healthy eating.
