Pretzel Dip

This vegan beer-cheese pretzel dipping is just as creamy and cheesy, but without the dairy! This beer cheese dip is great for soft pretzels but also works well with fondue, vegetables, and other foods.

You may wonder if, after you have made my recipe for soft vegan pretzels that you can make a vegan pretzel cheese dip. Friends, I'm one step ahead!

When I shared my recipe for homemade soft pretzels, I knew I would have to serve it with a cheesy dip. Although I love my recipe for vegan cheese sauce, there is something about warm soft pretzels that makes me want to add beer!

This rich, creamy beer cheese pretzel spread is full of flavour. Instead of using shredded vegan cheese, I used cream cheese and nutritional yeast. You get the creaminess and richness you desire without having to risk using shredded vegan cheese.

  • Vegan Butter Use store-bought vegan butter or make your own.
  • Flour Use all-purpose flour or a gluten-free substitute, if necessary.
  • Nondairy Milk -- Make sure that it is unflavored and unsweetened.
  • Beer
  • Nutritional Yeast- Adds a cheesey taste.
  • Vegan Cream Cheese
  • Dijon Mustard- Mustard gives the pretzel dip a sharp taste.
  • Soy Sauce You can use tamari or liquid aminos instead to make a gluten-free version of this beer cheese.
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Smoked-paprika -- This gives the pretzel dip a wonderful smoky flavor. Don't skip it!
  • Salt

How Can You Tell if Beer is Vegan?

Most popular beer brands are vegan. Some beers contain ingredients such as honey, lactose or isinglass, a fish-based product. You can check the website of a beer company or an app such as Barnivore for vegan options if you are unsure.

Pretzel dip: How to make it?

  • Melt vegan butter in a pan over medium heat. Whirl in the flour, and cook for one minute while whisking. Whisk in the plant-milk slowly, then the beer.
  • Simmer. Reduce the heat and simmer the mixture until it is thick. Stir the mixture periodically.
  • Make the sauce "cheesy". Take the sauce off the heat. Add the Dijon mustard and soy sauce. Then, whisk in the nutritional yeast.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning. Season the beer cheese with salt and/or pepper as necessary.

Success Tips

  • Choose the right beer. What's the best beer to use for beer cheese? For this recipe, I recommend using a light beer like a lager or pilsner. They have a milder flavour and won't overwhelm the dip.
  • Before adding liquid, make sure that the flour is golden before adding it. The flour must be cooked! The pretzel dip will taste raw if you don't cook the flour long enough.
  • Serve this dip warm. It is best to serve this pretzel dip warm. Reheat leftovers on the stove or in the microwave.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this vegan beer cheese soft pretzel dip with homemade pretzels. But don't stop! Here are some more ideas.

  • Raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots and cauliflower
  • Crackers or chips
  • Bread cubes and baguette slices
  • Sweet Potato Fries or Loaded Potato Skins with Air Fryer Shoestring fries.
  • Sprinkle it on your favorite vegan burgers (like these Quinoa Burgers).

Variations

  • Stir in some sriracha or another hot sauce to give this beer cheese pretzel spread a little kick.
  • Add a few drops liquid smoke for a smoky flavour.
  • Add thinly sliced green onion or chives to add a pop of colour and flavour.
  • Stir in green chiles to make it Tex-Mex.

How to store leftovers

Keep leftover pretzel dips in the fridge for up to three days. It can be reheated in the microwave, or over low heat on the stove.

Can I freeze this recipe?

You can freeze the pretzel dip up to three months. It can be stored in a zip-top bag or freezer-safe container. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving. It is important to note that the consistency of the soup may vary slightly after it has been frozen. However, it will still taste delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter 28 grams
  • 2 tablespoons flour 14 grams
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy milk 118 ml
  • 1/2 cup beer 118 ml
  • 1/3 cup nutritional yeast 20 grams
  • 8 ounces vegan cream cheese 1 cup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 7.5 grams
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce 5.5 grams
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder 4 grams
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder 2.4 grams
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 2 grams
  • Taste salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Melt the vegan Butter in a pan over medium heat. Whirl in the flour, and cook for one minute while whisking constantly. Whisk in the beer and non-dairymilk gradually. Stir the mixture periodically as it cooks for a few minutes on low heat.
  • Whisk in the Dijon mustard and the vegan cream cheese. Add the garlic powder, onion and smoked-paprika. Whisk until smooth.
  • Season the beer cheese with salt and/or pepper.

Storing leftover pretzel dip: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days in the fridge. It can be reheated in the microwave, or over low heat on the stove.

How to navigate social situations while on a plant-based diet?

Transitioning to a plant diet is difficult. This includes social situations like eating out with friends. Be proactive before going out for dinner to ensure that you don't compromise your dietary preferences while still enjoying tasty meals. Check the menu options before you go. Some restaurants are more accommodating to vegetarians than others. Vegetarians can choose from Indian or Japanese cuisines.

Talk to your friends and family about vegan options. This will help you avoid ordering errors at the restaurant, as well as avoiding awkward explanations or misinterpretations about your dietary restrictions. Trust the chef's judgment when creating vegan dishes. Talk to them if you have questions so they can best understand your needs.

Be sure to bring healthy snacks and drinks for those who are not familiar with vegan food. Your non-vegan relatives will soon be able to adopt a vegan diet. It is important to recognize the small gestures they make regarding a plant-based diet.

Navigating social situations while sticking to a vegan diet may seem challenging initially. It will become second nature over time. Start small and believe in yourself.
