Different types of garden beds
This article will cover the basics of how to grow a fruitful and lush garden with raised garden beds. These are the champions for urban gardening, and they're the darlings for sustainable cultivation. Raised beds are a great way to maximize your space, and provide a haven of plant-based goodness. This is true for new and experienced gardeners alike.
Raised Garden Beds
Raised garden beds can be made of wood, stone composites, or our favorite, metal. Raised garden beds are ideal for soil drainage, preventing soil compaction and allowing better soil quality control. Raised beds can be used by gardeners with different needs, such as those who have limited mobility or are restricted in space.
Container Garden Beds
Container gardens are flexible and can be placed in many places, such as patios, balconies and small yards. Pots are available in different sizes, and can be made of ceramic, fabric, or plastic. Container beds can be moved around as required and offer a lot of control over the soil conditions.
Vertical Garden Beds
Vertical garden beds offer an innovative way to maximize space in small spaces. Vertical garden beds use vertical structures such as trellises and hanging pots to grow plants vertically. Vertical beds can be used to grow climbers such as beans, tomatoes and cucumbers. They are a beautiful feature for any garden.
In-Ground Garden Beds
In-ground beds are a popular alternative to raised, container and vertical gardens. In-ground garden beds are made by preparing your existing soil.
Best Garden Bed Materials
There are many options when it comes to choosing the material for your garden bed. Each has its own benefits and disadvantages. The most common materials for raised beds include wood, metals, plastics, stone, concrete and fabric.
Wooden Garden Beds
Many gardeners choose wooden garden beds because of their natural aesthetics and easy construction. The beds are excellent for insulating plants and retaining moisture. Wood is also readily available and affordable. Wooden beds can rot or decay with time. This requires regular maintenance, and may even require replacement.
Metal Raised Garden Beds
Vego Garden Beds are popular metal garden beds that have many unique benefits. These beds are usually made from galvanized or aluminum materials that can withstand pests and harsh weather conditions.
Metal beds do not suffer from termite infestations, or any other pests that destroy wood. It eliminates the use of chemical treatments and provides a more environmentally friendly gardening solution. These materials are a good investment for the long term, as they do not require frequent replacements like other materials.
Plastic Garden Beds
Plastic garden beds are durable and require little maintenance. Lightweight, they are easy to move around and rearrange. Plastic beds are not as breathable as other materials and can degrade with time if they are exposed to sunlight.
Stone or Concrete Garden Beds
Concrete or stone beds are a long-lasting and visually appealing option for gardeners. The beds retain heat well, creating a warm climate for the plants. The stone beds can be customized to any size or shape. They are heavier and more difficult to install than other materials. Depending on the type and quality of concrete or stone used, they may be more costly.
Fabric or Grow Bags
Gardeners who have limited space can choose to use fabric or grow bags. They are lightweight and portable. These bags are made of breathable materials which promote healthy root development and drainage. Fabric beds are lightweight and easy to transport. They're ideal for those who rent or have temporary gardening needs. Fabric beds may need additional support to avoid sagging and may not have the same aesthetic appeal of other materials.
Why I chose Vego Garden Metal Garden Beds
Durability:Metal beds are known for the exceptional durability and high quality of their construction. Vego Garden beds are constructed from durable and weather-resistant material. They are designed to last 20 years or more without rotting or warping. This will ensure that your investment in the garden is a lasting one.
Modular design and easy assembly:Many garden beds are modular in design, making it easier to package, ship and assemble. Vego Garden Beds are designed for user comfort. The beds are simple to assemble and do not require any specialized tools. With their modular design, you can easily rearrange or expand the beds according to your changing gardening needs. Their low-maintenance design allows you to enjoy the gardening process instead of constantly maintaining the beds.
Design Options: Modular Metal Beds provide almost infinite options to design your dream vegetable garden. Vego Garden beds are available in a variety of designs to match any garden aesthetic. From color to size, to shape to design. Vego Garden has an online 3D planner tool which can be used for mocking up a design that is perfectly suited to specific yard dimensions.
Transforming a Barren Backyard Corner With Metal Raised Garden Beds
The earth-inspired glow up brought life to a once barren corner of my yard that was home to a concrete slab for years. A once-desolate, lifeless space transformed into an oasis full of flowers, greenery and .
Jennifer MacLeod, a foodscaping gardening coach from Sunflower and Sage Gardens, was my go-to person for advice. Within a couple of days, I had a transformed garden.
Step 1: Plan Your Garden Layout
Vego Garden's 3-D planning tool helped me design my garden in the space available. I chose two large beds that were 3.5' x 6' and 17" tall, connected by a trellis. I decided to use large beds instead of multiple smaller ones to maximize the space and give my plants more room to grow their roots.
What I bought for my garden bed:
- Two 9-in-1 Modular Raised Garden Beds, each 17" tall
- Three-Section Arched Trellis 4.1' long
- One 17" tall kid's first garden bed
- Two In-Ground Composter Bins
- 12 Solar Garden Lights
Step 2: Assemble your metal raised garden beds
The Vego Garden Beds arrived in cardboard boxes that were very compact, and I was eager to get started on assembling. The ease of assembly was impressive. I assembled it with my 3-year old son while watching Netflix. The three beds took some time, but the end result was so rewarding!
Step 3: Plant your new beds in the garden
I was ready to plant my beds in my new garden. They were laid directly on top of the barren soil where the concrete slab was removed.
Step 4: Fill your beds the "Hugelkultur Way"
It's now time to fill the beds. Vego Garden offers many resources for this, and they recommend using the "Hugelkultur technique" to fill your garden beds.
Hugelkultur, a gardening method that originated in Eastern Europe, offers a sustainable and innovative approach to cultivation. This method involves building raised beds using organic materials like logs, branches and leaves.
These materials slowly decompose and release nutrients. They also retain moisture in the soil, promoting a healthy ecosystem. Decomposition generates heat which extends the growing season.
Hugelkultur beds have excellent water retention abilities, which reduces the need to water frequently. This permaculture-inspired technique embodies the principles of recycling, resource conservation, and self-sustainability, making Hugelkultur an appealing choice for eco-conscious gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, productive, and resilient garden bed solution.
Straw saves the day!
Straw was the best option for me as I did not have many branches and logs. Straw is a great garden mulch. I use it for everything now!
It is important to use a soil mix that is rich in nutrients to build a strong foundation for your garden. However, this can be confusing for vegans.
Making your own compost will help you to keep costs down and garden in a vegan way. The majority of commercially available organic compost and soils contain animal products in some form. However, vegan options are now becoming more popular.
In order to create the best growing conditions, you should use a mixture of organic matter, compost and soil. You may need to fertilize the soil before planting, depending on its composition. I used Down to Earth’s Organic Vegan Mix.
Step 5: Choose your plants and plant your Veggie Bed
The fun part is choosing the plants that will make your garden bed come to life. When choosing your crops, consider the season, climate, sunlight available, and your personal preferences. Choose plants that suit your growing conditions. Here in Sacramento, my growing zone is 9b.
It is important to include a variety of colorful vegetables, aromatic herbs and flowers in your garden. This will attract pollinators, beneficial insects, and create a healthy ecosystem. Consider companion planting. This involves grouping plants that are compatible together to maximize the space available, to deter pests and to enhance growth.
Some common flowers that are good for garden beds include:
- Marigolds
- Zinneas
- Dahlias
- Cosmos
- Salvia
How to Plant a Thriving Foodscape on Raised Garden Beds
Location is Important: Select a sunny location for your raised bed garden, since most vegetables and flowers need at least six direct hours of sunlight each day. Avoid areas that are too shady or have strong winds, as these can negatively affect the growth of plants.
Planting Depth and Spacing:Follow the spacing recommendations for each type of plant to ensure adequate air circulation. Consider the specific needs of each plant when planting seeds or seedlings. Some gardening philosophies encourage dense planting. However, this is best for experienced gardeners.
MulchingApply an organic mulch around your plants, such as straw to conserve moisture, inhibit weed growth and regulate soil temperatures. Mulching adds organic material to the soil over time as it breaks down.
WateringRegular irrigation is essential for your raised garden bed to be successful. To encourage deep root growth, new plants need to be watered deeply. Then, ensure that the soil is evenly moistened but not waterlogged. I installed a drip irrigation that watered at regular intervals. This minimized nutrient loss that could occur from overwatering.
Fertilizing The soil is the heart of any successful garden, and it's where life begins. Garden beds are a great way to achieve this, because they let you create the perfect mix of organic matter, compost and soil amendments, no matter where you live. If you are new to gardening, hire a gardener to determine when and how to add organic fertilizers to the soil. Periodic applications of organic fertilisers are needed as your plants grow to ensure healthy growth and productivity.
Weed control: Be vigilant in weeding your raised garden beds. Remove any weeds as they appear to ensure that your plants are not competing for resources with them. Mulching can help to suppress the growth of weeds. To prevent weeds from growing in your walkways, you can also use cardboard to cover the raised beds.
Monitoring & Maintenance: Monitor your raised garden beds for signs of pests or diseases. Prune when needed, remove spent blooms, and harvest crops as they are at their best to encourage continued growth.
Every garden is different, so you should adapt these tips according to your unique circumstances and plants. Your raised garden bed can flourish with the right planning, attention and care. It will provide a bounty of harvests and bring you joy.
Watch your garden spring to life
You'll enjoy the process of growing your garden from seedlings up to mature specimens. Vego Garden beds are a great way to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, legumes and edible flowers. You'll soon be harvesting a bounty of fresh produce.
This season, I am growing:
- Tomatoes (many different types, in large quantities)
- Peppers (several types)
- Bell Peppers
- Basil (varieties)
- Japanese Eggplant
- Pumpkins
- Cantelope
- Watermelon
- Cucumber (from seeds)
- Lettuce (from seeds)
- Beans (from Seed)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to sustain a plant-based diet?
For their environmental and health benefits, plant-based diets have been growing in popularity. Plant-based food is generally more sustainable than food derived from animal resources. This is because it produces less greenhouse gases and causes less pollution. Plant-based foods are also more sustainable than those made from animal products. They require less inputs to grow and produce their food. Commercially raised animals often need large amounts of water, soil, and fossil fuels. Some environmental effects of livestock production have been associated with global warming. Reducing consumption of these foods and incorporating more plant-based meals to one's week could help reduce carbon footprint and promote healthier, more eco-friendly practices.
Is a plant-based diet the same as a vegan diet?
A plant-based diet can be very different from a vegan diet. A plant-based eating plan is one that focuses on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes. This eating pattern typically eliminates or dramatically reduces the consumption of animal products such as meat or dairy, but small amounts of animal proteins may be included. Veganism on the other side is a ethical lifestyle choice. This involves eating only plant-based foods and avoiding animal products. Although vegans may also choose to adopt a plant based diet as part their lifestyle, they are separate concepts.
Is it possible to build muscle using a plant-based diet.
Yes, it is possible to build muscle on a plant-based diet. You don't have to eat vegetarian food to build muscle. It just means that the type of food you eat will determine how strong and large your muscles can become. Plant-based diets may include high-protein foods such as legumes (beans, lentils, and peas), doves, seitan, nuts, nutritional yeast, tofu, tempeh, and many more. Combined with regular exercise and proper supplementation of vitamins and minerals, a properly balanced plant-based diet can help you reach your fitness goals while promoting better overall health. Processed foods are often loaded with harmful additives and preservatives, so it is better to eat whole foods than processed ones. It is crucial to get enough protein every day for steady gains. You can incorporate foods like flaxseed oil, quinoa and nut butter into your daily meals. A nutritionist that specializes in plant-based nutritional can help you gain muscle mass, or to maintain your current body and health.
Can a Plant-Based Diet Help You Lose Weight?
Yes, a plant-based diet is able to help you lose weight. You can eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grain, and other plant-based protein sources to provide enough volume without having to eat unhealthy fats or carbs. A well-rounded vegan meal plan is usually low in saturated fat and cholesterol-containing foods like red meat and processed snacks that tend to add weight instead of take it away. Additionally, research shows that following a plant-based diet may help boost metabolism and lower some risk factors for obesity, such as inflammation. Incorporating healthy ingredients high in fiber and stopping the intake of unhealthy sugars, starches, white bread, and pasta can also further support weight loss while still providing important vitamins and minerals the body needs to stay healthy.
What are some of the best sources for protein on a plant based diet?
Some excellent sources of protein on a plant-based diet include legumes such as beans, lentils, and chickpeas; soy products like tofu and tempeh; grains such as quinoa and teff; nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and cashews; seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower; and green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Many of these plant proteins also contain fiber. The addition of omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds or chia seeds to a plant-based diet can help to balance nutrient levels.
Are there any celebrity or athlete advocates of a plant-based diet?
Yes, many athletes and celebrities support a plant-based diet. They include Kyrie Irving (NBA player), Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1 World Champion), Natalie Portman (actress), Meghan Trainor (singer) and Kenneth Farrow (NFL running back). Each one has chosen to be vegetarian/vegan for their own reasons and have achieved great results in their sporting endeavors as well as their artistic endeavors. Actress Alicia Silverstone even wrote a book titled Kind Diet, about her experiences with veganism. Professional tennis player Novak Djokovic has credited his career successes to his unconventional habit of eating primarily organic vegan foods during competitions; his stats have drastically improved since he adopted this regimen. These four professional athletes share some remarkable qualities. They all mention a higher energy level, faster recovery from injury, and better overall health. The success stories demonstrate that plant-based diets can be an effective tool for achieving better athleticism.

How To
How do you transition to a plant-based diet?
Although it can seem daunting to switch to a plant based diet, it is possible with the right preparation and education. To start, take baby steps and gradually incorporate the necessary dietary changes - replacing animal proteins with plant-based proteins, for example. Whole foods are healthier and filling than processed alternatives.
Planning and meal preparation requires dedication. Plan your meals ahead of time so you can plan and shop for the right ingredients and allocate enough time for each dish. Multi-cookers and slow cookers can be a great investment. Batch cooking allows you to make multiple meals in one sitting.
You should also keep trying out new flavors. Try different cuisines to add variety to your vegetarian diet. It is better to make a grocery checklist based on recipes than relying on impulse purchases at the grocery shop. It'll be much easier to switch once you have the right ingredients.
