We need to ensure that we are covering all our nutritional bases. While eating a vegan diet and going plant-based is a great way to help animals, the environment and our bodies, it's important to cover our nutritional bases. You're getting the majority of your nutrients if you eat a balanced diet that includes whole grains, legumes like beans, lentils, and peas as well as nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. One exception: Vitamin B12.

What is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B 12 is the only nutrient not found in plants. This vitamin is made in the digestive tracts and is therefore found in animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs.
Vitamin B 12 is essential for red blood cell formation and proper neurological function. It is also necessary for DNA and RNA synthesis.
Vitamin B12: How to Consume, Digest and Absorb it
To digest and absorb Vitamin B 12, we need adequate stomach acid, as well as a substance called intrinsic factor. Many people do not have enough stomach acid, or intrinsic factor. This is why B12 supplements are needed by more than just vegans.
Some myths regarding vitamin B 12 are simply not true. For example, you can't get it from fermented food, unwashed fruits and vegetables, or even sea vegetables. Sea vegetables are a source of inactive analogs to vitamin B 12, which can interfere with absorption.
Some people claim that we produce our own vitamin B 12, just as other animals do. However, vitamin B 12 is absorbed much higher in the digestive system than it is produced. We poop any vitamin B 12 that we produce.
Fortified foods and supplements are the only sources of vitamin B 12 for vegans.
A vegan can consume insufficient amounts of vitamin B 12 without realizing its effects for quite some time. It may be irreversible damage to the nervous system by the time you start to notice signs of B 12 deficiency. Anemia, weight loss, memory loss, and numbness in the extremities are all symptoms of B 12 deficiency.
According to research, vegans and raw-foodists are at risk of vitamin B 12 deficiencies. In some cases, the deficiency can reach up to 70%. You shouldn't wait to see if you develop a deficiency. If it is vitamin B 12 that's the case, vegans should supplement or consume fortified food as soon as possible.
Vegetarians & Vegans: Vitamin B12 Sources & Recommendations
It is easy to consume enough vitamin B12. Adults should consume 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 per day. Fortified foods and supplements are readily available. Ginny Messina, registered dietitian nutritionist, and vegan nutrition expert Ginny is recommending one of these:
- Fortified foods with 2 to 3.5 micrograms per day
- Add 25-100 micrograms to your daily diet
- Add 1000 micrograms to your daily intake twice a week
Is Vitamin B12 Available in Vegan Foods?
You can also find B12 in certain vegan and vegetarian foods. How? Find foods fortified with B12! In the case of nutritional yeast, which is a popular vegan ingredient, it's often fortified. If you rely on fortified food, make sure to check the label of the nutritional facts to find out the amount.
Some vegan products and nutritional yeast may not be fortified with Vitamin B12.
Ask your doctor to perform a vitamin blood test. Work with a registered nutritionist dietitian to create a nutrition plan that is tailored for you. You can consult many registered dietitians who are vegetarian nutrition experts.
